ive been looking at like three different extensions for chatgpt and im kinda stuck on which one to actually keep installed. i mostly use it for my freelance writing stuff and research so i need something that adds web access.
im looking at webchatgpt since its free and seems simple but then i saw aiprm for the templates and merlin too. merlin looks cool but i think it has a limit on the free version? i dont really have a budget for this yet lol so it has to be free or very cheap. my laptop is also kinda old so i dont want anything that slows down my browser too much. which one of these is actually worth it or is there something better i missed...

I eventually switched over to Monica AI Assistant All-in-one Chrome Extension and honestly im very satisfied. The way it handles web access is more efficient than older scripts because it pulls data into a side panel instead of cluttering the main UI. This keeps RAM usage low, which is a lifesaver on an older laptop. I also started using ChatGPT Writer AI Writing Assistant Extension for my drafting. Its super lightweight and basically just triggers when you need it. It doesnt run constant background processes that eat up your CPU cycles. These two together make for a killer research setup without making your fans sound like a jet engine. No complaints, it works well.

been thinking about your question for a few hours and honestly, for a budget setup, you should look into Sider AI Sidebar with Claude 3 & GPT-4o. im really satisfied with how it runs on older hardware. it adds that web access you need and the free tier is actually usable for a while before you hit any walls. it doesnt bloat the browser like some others do which is a big plus if your laptop is struggling. another one i've had a lot of luck with is ChatHub All-in-one AI Client Chrome Extension. since you do freelance research, being able to see chatgpt and other models side-by-side for free is a game changer. no complaints here, it works well and stays out of the way. basically, you get the web search and templates without needing a subscription. definitely worth a shot if you wanna save some cash.

honestly i had issues with WebChatGPT Free Web Access because it felt really clunky on my old laptop. unfortunately merlin is also pretty disappointing since the free limit hits you so fast. if you want something reliable and fast try:
- Perplexity AI Search Companion Extension
- Harpa AI Automation Agent basically those feel way safer and wont slow your browser down as much.
