I've heard it's an AI chatbot similar to ChatGPT, but I want to confirm if there are any costs associated with it. Can anyone provide details on how to access it and if there are any limitations or features that are not available for free users? Thanks!

Bump - same question here

DeepSeek is free for now if you are using the web version or the app. In my experience with these rollouts, they tend to stay free during the growth phase to grab market share, but things can change fast once they get popular. Before you dive in too deep, I have two questions:

  • Are you planning to use it for basic chat and writing?
  • Or are you looking to integrate it into your own software using their API? The answer changes things because while the chat is free, the API usage eventually costs money based on tokens. Id suggest grabbing it now while the tiers are this generous tho.

Adding my two cents here since Ive been messing with these models since the early days of GPT-2. Honestly, the whole is it free thing gets a bit complicated depending on how technical you want to get. Quick question before I go off on a tangent - are you just looking to use their web interface for casual stuff, or are you thinking about running it on your own hardware? I ask because I'm a big DIY advocate. A few months back, I spent a whole weekend trying to get one of their larger models running on my current home server setup. It was a total headache at first because:

  • I had to mess around with quantization to make it fit my VRAM.
  • The initial setup kept throwing errors until I updated my local drivers.
  • My electricity bill definitely felt it that month lol. Point is, if you have the hardware, it's free forever because you can just download the weights. If you're just using their website, enjoy the free ride while it lasts because companies usually start charging for the high-end features eventually.
