Which code editor provides the best integration for DeepSeek?

So ive been getting really into using DeepSeek V3 lately because the pricing is honestly insane compared to OpenAI and it seems way smarter for the niche python scripts Im writing for this inventory system Im building for a bakery downtown. I need to get a proper workflow setup by next week though because my current "copy-paste into the web browser" method is totally killing my soul lol and wasting so much time.

I am basically torn between just sticking with VS Code and using something like the Continue extension or the Roo Code stuff versus just jumping ship to Cursor. I tried Cursor for a hot minute but Im not sure if the way it handles custom API keys for DeepSeek is as seamless as people say or if it forces you into their pro tier anyway. Im on a super tight budget for this freelance gig so I really want to stick to the pay-as-you-go token model rather than a fixed $20 monthly sub if I can help it. VS Code feels like the safe bet since its free and I know it but Cursors whole "index your entire codebase" thing looks so tempting if it actually plays nice with DeepSeek-V3 without a headache.

Which one of these actually gives the best "native" feel for DeepSeek specifically without making me jump through a million hoops to get the chat and autocomplete working right?

  • Continue Open Source AI Extension: Best for raw DeepSeek V3 API control.
  • Cursor AI Code Editor: Might push that sub eventually. Tbh, I would suggest Microsoft VS Code.

How complex is the inventory logic getting? Ive been super satisfied with Zed Code Editor lately. It handles custom DeepSeek keys natively and works well, no complaints honestly.
