Ive been a VS Code guy for like 8 years now and usually I just stick with Copilot but honestly Im getting kinda fed up with the suggestions lately. I started messing around with DeepSeek-V3 and Coder because the benchmarks are insane for the price but Im having a hell of a time getting it to feel native in my workflow. I've got this freelance gig for a startup in Berlin due next Sunday and I really need a setup that doesnt lag out when Im doing heavy refactoring. I tried the Continue extension but the latency felt weird, maybe it was just my API key or some weird routing issue? Or maybe Im just bad at configuring the config.json file lol. I also looked at Cursor but Im not sure if it supports the DeepSeek API as smoothly as its own models without a lot of overhead. Im basically looking for something where the inline completion is snappy and the chat actually understands the file context without me having to manually feed it every single time. Im getting really nervous about missing this deadline if I keep fiddling with my settings instead of actually writing logic.

  • VS Code with specific plugins like Roo or Continue
  • Cursor (is it actually better for custom models?)
  • JetBrains with some direct API plugin

Which IDE or specific setup are you guys finding works best for DeepSeek integration right now without all the friction?

I'm totally obsessed with using Cursor AI Editor v0.4x for this! Like someone mentioned, the context awareness is literally magic compared to standard plugins. It feels so snappy.

  • Plug in your DeepSeek V3 API key directly
  • It's way cheaper than a monthly sub! Seriously, just go for it and you'll crush that Berlin deadline. Its fantastic!

Ive tried many setups over the years, and honestly, im always cautious about switching tools mid-project. For DeepSeek, Cursor AI Editor v0.4x is the most reliable choice ive found. In my experience:

  • It handles file context natively
  • Use the DeepSeek-V3 API key directly
  • Much less lag than the Continue plugin I used to stick with JetBrains IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate, but Cursor is just way more optimized for these custom models.
