What are the most important soft skills for AI engineers?

So I finally landed this AI engineering gig at a startup in San Francisco and I start in like two weeks. My tech skills are solid but I'm kinda freaking out about the soft skills side because its a tiny team and I'll be talking to non-tech founders constantly. I'm torn between focusing my prep on two main areas:

  • Stakeholder communication (explaining why a model is hallucinating without sounding like a nerd)
  • Ethics and bias management (making sure we dont get sued)

I only got about $200 left in my learning budget before my first paycheck hits. Which one is gonna save my skin more in the first month?? Or is there something else I'm missing...

> explaining why a model is hallucinating without sounding like a nerd Congrats on the new gig! Honestly, stakeholder communication is gonna be your lifesaver in those first few weeks. I am really satisfied with how much smoother things go when I can explain model drift or token limits in plain English to my boss. You definitely dont need to blow your whole 200 dollar learning budget on fancy certifications yet. I found that just practicing my ELI5 pitches helped a ton. To keep my notes organized on a budget, I have been using Rocketbook Core Reusable Smart Notebook Letter Size and it works well for sketching out architecture for non-tech folks without wasting paper. I am super happy with how it performs. Focus on being the translator between the code and the business goals first. The ethics stuff is huge too, but talking to founders is a daily thing... you are gonna do great!

Unfortunately, I find focusing purely on communication is not as good as expected because you need a safety net for your actual technical decisions. I had issues with my founders when I couldn't justify my architecture choices. Pick up O'Reilly Media Designing Machine Learning Systems 1st Edition instead. Tbh, it is a better use of your budget since a methodical framework prevents those awkward conversations from happening in the first place.

Unfortunately, I had issues with Manning Publications Trustworthy AI 1st Edition because my boss ignored my bias reports.

  • Pick communication. Managing expectations safely is what kept me from getting fired.
