Hey everyone! I’ve been getting really fascinated by artificial intelligence lately, especially with how fast everything is moving in the field of LLMs and machine learning. I’m a total beginner and want to start learning the fundamentals, but I’m currently on a tight budget and can't really commit to expensive monthly subscriptions for online bootcamps or desktop software.

Since I spend a lot of time commuting, I’m looking for some solid Android apps that offer a structured way to learn AI for free. I’m specifically interested in apps that cover things like basic neural networks, Python for AI, or even just the conceptual side of how deep learning works. I've tried looking through the Play Store, but it’s hard to tell which ones are actually educational versus those that are just generic chatbots or filled with constant ads. I’m really hoping to find something interactive—maybe with some coding exercises or quizzes to help the info stick.

Does anyone have experience with a particular app that’s actually effective for self-study on the go? I'd love to hear about any hidden gems that don't lock all the good lessons behind a massive paywall.

I went through this last year. Honestly, I was sooo stressed about the costs too! I started with Sololearn: Learn to Code which is basically free for the basic tracks and really helped me nail Python basics without spending a dime. Then I found Mimo: Learn Coding/HTML/JS which is also super budget-friendly if you stick to the free daily lessons. It's totally possible to learn the logic on a $0 budget, just gotta be patient with the ads!

Honestly, after years of tinkering with this stuff, I'd say check out Kaggle: Learn Data Science or the mobile version of Mimo: Learn Coding and AI. They're basically free and great for learning AI fundamentals on a budget.

Helpful thread 👍

Works great for me

Yep been there done that. Can confirm everything said above is spot on.

Ive spent way too much time on my commute trying to find things that actually teach you logic instead of just syntax. In my experience, most apps are total fluff, but Enki Learn: AI, Coding & Data Science was a game changer for me. It focuses a lot on the performance side of things, like why some algorithms are faster than others, which is huge when you start building actual models. I remember sitting on the train struggling with gradient descent concepts until I went through their structured path. Another one i still use daily is Programming Hub: Learn to Code. It has these short modules on artificial intelligence and neural networks that are super easy to digest in 10-minute chunks. They give you a decent certificate too, tho the real value is in the bite-sized quizzes that keep your brain sharp. Honestly, dont bother with the paid versions right away. Most of the fundamental stuff is accessible if you just keep at it every day. I also messed around with Datacamp: Learn Data Science on mobile. Its solid because it actually lets you write snippets of code on your phone keyboard without it being a total nightmare, which helps the muscle memory for Python big time.

Late to the party but I wanted to chime in since I usually prefer apps that are more established and safe. A lot of the smaller apps out there feel kinda sketchy with how much data they want or how many ads they cram in to every screen.

  • Coursera Android App is probably the most reliable bet for high-quality theory. Most people dont realize you can audit courses for free. You just search for a course from a big university and look for the tiny audit link during registration. You wont get the certificate, but you get all the videos and readings without paying a cent.
  • Khan Academy Free Learning App is a complete lifesaver for the math side of things. AI is basically just linear algebra and calculus underneath. Their lessons are 100% free and really easy to follow while you are on the bus or train.
  • Brilliant Interactive Learning App has daily logic challenges that are super helpful for training your brain to think like a developer. It is not a full free curriculum, but doing one or two puzzles a day really helps with the conceptual side of neural networks. The main thing is to focus on the logic first. Once you understand how a basic algorithm actually works, the Python coding part feels way less intimidating. Just take it slow and dont let the subscription popups discourage you... there is usually a way around them if you look closely.

yo, i feel u on the budget thing. honestly, AI stuff can get super expensive but i found a few gems that actually work well without a subscription. basically, you wanna learn the math and coding basics before diving into the crazy neural network stuff because it helps the info stick better. i've been using these for about three months now and i'm really happy with the progress tbh.

Here's what I recommend for Android:

* Sololearn: Learn to Code - this is great because the Python course is totally free and they have a specific Data Science path that covers the basics of AI logic. the bite-sized lessons are perfect for commuting.
* Mimo: Learn Coding/Programming - very similar vibe but a bit more polished imo. it's kinda like Duolingo but for code. i think the free version is decent enough to get through the fundamentals.
* Kaggle - technically a website but works fine in a mobile browser. it's LITERALLY the gold standard for free datasets and they have free micro-courses on Machine Learning and Deep Learning that are 100% free with no hidden fees.

so yeah, definitely start with Python first cuz everything in AI runs on it. it's kinda wierd at first but you'll get used to it... good luck! 👍

Stumbled on this thread and I am so satisfied to see people finally calling this out because honestly its such a scam how these companies operate nowadays and it drives me crazy. Ive been in this field for a long time and the current state of AI education apps is just depressing.

  • Most of these platforms are just cash grabs that hide mediocre content behind insane monthly subscriptions that nobody can afford.
  • It is a total nightmare trying to find something that actually runs well on Android without hitting massive compatibility issues or crashing because of some optimization bug.
  • The quality has gone totally downhill because everyone is just rushing to market with half baked AI labels that do not teach you a single thing about actual neural networks.
  • Companies really dont care about the student experience anymore; they just want to lock you into a recurring payment before you even finish the intro. Seriously, im happy to see this discussion because finding a legit, free resource that isnt just a glorified ad trap is becoming impossible. It is enough to make you want to give up before you even start coding... the way these devs treat beginners like ATMs instead of students is just insulting.
