Hey everyone! I’ve been absolutely blown away by all the AI developments happening lately, from LLMs to image generators, and it’s finally pushed me to want to learn how to build this stuff myself. I know Python is the go-to language for AI, but I’m starting pretty much from square one and feeling a little intimidated by where to begin.
Here’s the thing: my schedule is pretty packed right now. I spend about forty minutes on the train for my daily commute and have small pockets of time during lunch breaks where I can’t really pull out a laptop and start a heavy, focused coding session. I was thinking that a mobile app would be the perfect way to nail down the basics and start dipping my toes into AI concepts while I’m on the move.
However, when I search the App Store or Play Store, it’s honestly a bit overwhelming. A lot of the 'free' apps I’ve tried either lock the actual useful lessons behind a massive monthly subscription after the first two chapters, or they focus entirely on general web development, which isn't really my primary interest. I’m specifically looking for something that bridges the gap between basic Python syntax and the actual libraries used in the AI world, like NumPy, Pandas, or even some introductory Machine Learning logic.
I’m not expecting to become a lead engineer just by tapping on my phone, but I’d love an app that offers interactive exercises, perhaps a built-in mobile code editor to practice small snippets, and a clear learning path toward data science. Since I'm currently a student on a tight budget, I’m really looking for something that is genuinely free or at least has a very generous free tier that doesn't cut you off right when things get interesting.
Has anyone here used a specific app that helped them get a solid start in Python specifically for AI development? I’d love to hear your recommendations—especially if the app handles the transition from basic logic to more complex data structures well. Which ones are actually worth the storage space?
Seconding the recommendation above! Honestly, Sololearn is a solid start, but if you're serious about the AI side, you gotta be careful not to get stuck in 'tutorial hell' where you just mimic code without understanding the logic.
I mean, since you're on a budget, definitely check out Mimo: Learn Coding & HTML. It has a decent Python track that touches on data structures. Also, for the heavy lifting, try Enki: Learn Data Science & AI. It's basically built for your commute because the lessons are bite-sized and actually focus on things like NumPy and Pandas logic early on. Just a heads up tho—always double-check the 'free' limits because they change constantly! Good luck!
Just found this thread and oh man, I went through this exact same struggle last year! I spent years trying to find the perfect mobile setup cuz my commute was basically my only study time. Honestly, I wasted so much time on apps that were basically just multiple-choice quizzes that didn't teach me how to actually CODE.
I eventually stumbled onto Mimo: Learn Coding & HTML and it was a total game changer for my budget. They have a Python path that actually gets into the nitty-gritty of data structures without charging you a fortune up front. I think the pro version is like $10 a month if you want everything, but the free tier let me get through the basics and into some really cool logic stuff before I hit a paywall.
But the REAL win for me was using Enki: Learn Code, Programming & AI. It’s soooo good for that transition into AI because they have specific tracks for Data Science and SQL that actually felt relevant to what I wanted to do. I remember sitting on the train literally vibrating with excitement when I finally understood how NumPy arrays worked on a five-inch screen haha! It definitely bridges that gap between "hello world" and actual machine learning concepts better than most. Definitely worth the storage space if you're trying to keep things cheap but high quality. Good luck dude, you got this!
Ok so I've been in ur shoes trying to learn on the train and honestly, most apps are trash for AI specifically. But in my experience, two actually stand out. For your situation, I'd HIGHLY recommend Sololearn: Learn to Code because their Python course is actually free and they have a specific Data Science path that covers the NumPy and Pandas basics you mentioned. It has a built-in compiler so u can literally code on the move without a laptop.
Another one I've tried is Mimo: Learn Coding/Python. It's more gamified, which is kinda cool for lunch breaks, but the free tier gets annoying faster than Sololearn imo. If you want the most technical depth for free, Sololearn is the way to go. It bridges that gap between basic syntax and actual data manipulation way better than the others. Basically, just stick to the Data Science track there and u'll be golden. gl!!
No way, I literally just dealt with this yesterday. Small world.
