Hey everyone! I am currently heading into my sophomore year with a pretty heavy credit load, and I am starting to feel a bit overwhelmed with the sheer volume of reading and problem sets I have. I have been using basic tools like ChatGPT for quick explanations, but I am looking for something more tailored specifically for academic success and deep study sessions.

I am looking for an AI assistant that can help with a few specific things:

  • Breaking down complex research papers into digestible summaries
  • Helping with step-by-step solutions for calculus and physics problems
  • Generating practice quizzes or flashcards based on my specific lecture notes

I have seen a few ads for tools like Claude, Perplexity, and some specialized study apps like Grammarly or Quizlet's new features, but it is hard to tell which ones are actually worth the subscription cost on a tight student budget. I really need something that is accurate and does not just hallucinate facts when I am cramming for midterms. I am especially interested in tools that can handle large PDF uploads easily without losing context.

Has anyone here found a specific AI tool that genuinely improved their grades or saved them a significant amount of time? I would love to hear which ones you swear by and what your experience has been like!

hey, so basically I've been digging into the technical side of this to save some cash. for your situation, I'd suggest starting with NotebookLM since it's free and handles huge PDF uploads really well without losing context. it's actually amazing for turning lecture notes into quizzes and summaries. for the math and physics stuff, Claude 3.5 Sonnet is highkey better for logic and step-by-step problems compared to other models i've seen. the free tier is okay, but if you want to spend, the Perplexity AI Pro student discount brings it down to like $10/month iirc. it's way more accurate cuz it cites everything. honestly, dont waste $20 on ChatGPT Plus if you're on a budget—the value proposition just isn't there for some tools when the free versions are this good. but yeah, it really depends on your needs... have you tried uploading your syllabus to any of these yet? i guess it works differently for everyone!

Late to the party but I went through this last year! Honestly, I was sooo worried about the cost. Just sharing my experience with these two:

  • Perplexity AI Pro vs Claude 3.5 Sonnet
  • Perplexity was AMAZING because it cites sources so I could verify facts!!
  • Claude felt more natural for my physics problems but the free limit was low. Definitely be careful with hallucinations tho... I mean ur grades are everything so always double check! peace
