Which AI study assistants are actually worth the hype for college stuff right now and wont just make up fake citations? Ive been using the standard LLMs like ChatGPT and Claude for like a year now and I thought I had my workflow down pretty good with custom instructions and everything but this semester is kicking my teeth in. Im a junior at UW and my workloads gotten way more technical lately with these upper-div poly sci and stats classes.
The problem is that lately even the paid versions are hallucinating way too much for my comfort level or they just struggle with the massive 50 page PDFs my profs keep assigning. I tried a few of those AI tutor apps that pop up on tiktok but honestly they just feel like cheap wrappers for older models and they cant handle complex logic at all. Im looking for something that is actually reliable for active recall and maybe something that can handle OCR really well for my handwritten notes too.
My budget is around 15 or 20 bucks a month max since Im already paying for way too many subscriptions but I need something solid before my midterms hit next month. Are people still sticking with the big names or is there some specialized academic tool I missed out on? ...
ngl junior year is a total beast, especially when the reading lists get that long. i totally get the frustration with hallucinations cuz its the last thing you need when prepping for a stats midterm. if youre struggling with those massive PDFs, you should definitely check out Google NotebookLM. i started using it a few months ago and its been a lifesaver for heavy reading. unlike the standard chat bots, it only uses the sources you upload, which cuts down on those fake citations significantly. here are a few i think are actually worth looking into:
Jumping in... you doing data crunching or just paper summaries? Im super happy with:

Honestly, i spent way too much time testing specialized tools last month and they were pretty disappointing. Most struggled with formulas or had tiny context windows that ignored the middle of my long PDFs... super frustrating.
^ This. Also, i have been so disappointed with how these tools handle niche data. Last semester i used a hyped assistant and it totally hallucinated my stats data... almost tanked my GPA. Honestly, just search YouTube for AI for academic research comparison.
