Got a big interview for a junior ML dev role here in London next Wednesday and I am lowkey panicking. I spent like six months just grinding LeetCode and math thinking that was the only way in. But then I read some articles saying technical skills are the bare minimum and storytelling is what actually gets you hired. Then I saw a different thread on a forum saying recruiters only care about your GitHub.
The job description is literally just a list of libraries and math stuff though so I dont know what to believe. My social skills are okay but I definitely get awkward when explaining complex stuff to non-tech people. How much do these soft skills actually matter for someone at my level?
> I definitely get awkward when explaining complex stuff to non-tech people. How much do these soft skills actually matter for someone at my level? Honestly, be careful about ignoring communication. Even for juniors, managers need to know you can explain stuff like model drift or bias to a PM. I would suggest checking out Wiley Storytelling with Data 1st Edition Paperback before Wednesday. It helps with the why behind the numbers. Maybe try recording yourself explaining a project? Might want to consider that to catch your awkward habits. You got this!
Agree. Unfortunately, I tanked a role I really wanted by geeking out too hard. TL;DR: Don't just grind math; if you can't simplify your work, stakeholders will think you're a liability.
