honestly im just about done with these 'educational' apps that are basically just digital stickers and loud noises. my logic was that with all the AI hype there would be something actually smart that adapts to my kids, but everything i find is just a mess or way too simple. ive got a 6 year old and a 9 year old and they have totally different skill levels, obviously.

im sitting here in chicago trying to plan out our summer schedule because break starts in like three weeks and i really need them to have something that isnt just mindless youtube. i was thinking if there was an AI game that could help with reading or maybe creative writing for my oldest because he loves making stories. i looked at a couple things but one was just a glorified chatbot that gave weird answers and the other cost way too much for what it was.

im willing to spend up to 15 or 20 bucks a month if the tech is actually decent but right now it feels like a total waste of time. i just want something that keeps them engaged without me having to hover over their shoulder every five minutes to fix a bug or explain why the app is being glitchy. has anyone found something that actually works for this age range or am i just chasing a ghost here...

The AI market for kids is basically a minefield of overpromises. I've had issues with several apps that claim to be adaptive but are really just random. Unfortunately, most of what you find is just not as good as expected and the safety standards are frankly worrying. If you want something reliable, I eventually settled on Ello Reading Subscription with AI Tutor for the younger one. It actually listens to them read and corrects them, which is decent tech. For your 9-year-old, Night Zookeeper Online Writing Platform is probably the safest bet for creative writing, tho it still feels a bit structured. My main tip is to verify the privacy certifications first. Many of these AI tools are just wrappers for other tech and dont have proper filters. Stick to things specifically built for the 5-10 age bracket with clear data protection.

Like someone mentioned, most of these apps are just fluff. I've had issues with subscriptions that cost way too much for basic logic. If you're on a budget:

  • Duolingo ABC Literacy App for Kids is free and works for the 6yo.
  • Prodigy Math Game Level Up Subscription adapts well for older kids. Unfortunately, most AI tech for kids is a mess. Dont bother with overhyped $20 bots.

TL;DR: Most AI apps for kids are basically glorified beta tests, so reliability is the biggest hurdle if you want to stop hovering. @Reply #3 - good point! Subscription prices are getting insane for tech that barely works half the time. Ive been testing these things for years and honestly, most of them are just way too fragile for a 6-year-old to use alone without it breaking or giving some weird hallucination. I have a couple of thoughts on what actually stays stable, but I gotta ask a couple things first to narrow it down. Are you looking for something that is purely curriculum-based, like a digital classroom, or are you open to more open-ended creative sandboxes where the AI acts as a co-writer? Also, do you need it to be 100% hands-off from the second they open the tablet, or can you spare five minutes to help them set up a session prompt... some of the best tools require a tiny bit of adult input to keep the AI on track.

@Reply #1 - good point! Safety is a massive deal when we're talking about LLMs and kids. Honestly tho, when you find the tech that actually works, its incredible! I spent way too much time looking at the specs for some of these platforms because I wanted something that actually adjusts the difficulty curve based on real data, not just some random timer. If you want your 9 year old to get stoked about writing, you gotta check out StoryWizard.ai Personalized Story Generator Subscription. It uses generative AI to help them build worlds and then generates images based on their text. Its so cool because it keeps them in a flow state by suggesting plot points if they get stuck. For the 6 year old, Khan Academy Kids Adaptive Learning Mobile App is basically the gold standard for adaptive algorithms. The way it maps out their progress across common core standards without being annoying is fantastic... definitely better than those sticker apps. A few other things that are actually smart:

  • Duolingo ABC Early Literacy Learning App
  • The speech recognition is actually solid for kids who mumble or mispronounce words.
  • Sizzle AI Interactive Step-by-Step Learning App
  • This one is great for the older kid if he gets into logic puzzles or math. The best part is most of these fit your budget or are even free. Summer in Chicago is great but you definitely need those 30 minutes of peace while they actually learn something legit!
