Hi everyone! My 10-year-old son has been showing a ton of interest in making his own video games lately. He has played around with Scratch for a while and managed to build some cool little animations, but he is starting to get really curious about what he calls real programming. He specifically keeps asking about Python because he heard it is what professional developers use.
The problem is that every time we try to look at actual code, the syntax errors and the steep learning curve become pretty discouraging. He gets frustrated when a single missing colon breaks the whole project. I have been seeing so much news about AI coding assistants lately, and it got me thinking: are there any AI-powered tools specifically designed for young beginners? I would love to find something that helps him bridge the gap between block-based coding and text-based coding without it being too overwhelming.
I am looking for a tool that acts more like a patient tutor rather than just a generator that writes the code for him. It would be amazing if the tool could explain the logic behind the lines of code it suggests. Here are a couple of things I am specifically looking for:
I have seen tools like GitHub Copilot or Cursor mentioned in tech circles, but those seem like they might be overkill or too complex for someone who is still learning what a loop is. Are there any platforms you have used with your own kids or in a classroom setting that strike that perfect balance?
What do you think is the best AI coding companion for a young person just starting their journey? I would really appreciate any suggestions or personal stories you can share!
Quick question while I have a sec: are you looking for a free resource or are you open to a monthly sub? Budget makes a big difference here tbh.
> I would love to find something that helps him bridge the gap between block-based coding and text-based coding without it being too overwhelming. Ok so i think Replit with Replit AI might be your best bet. In my experience, it basically explains errors in plain English. But i would suggest being careful with the privacy settings, tbh. Honestly, make sure to monitor his account cuz you dont want him on the public forums... its a great tool but safety comes first!! gl
I totally agree with the point about avoiding pro-level tools for now. Honestly, the market is currently flooded with AI designed for speed, not learning, which is the exact opposite of what a 10-year-old needs. I have seen so many parents make the mistake of jumping straight into a pro IDE only for their kids to give up after an hour of debugging config files, right?
Yep, this is the way
No way, I literally just dealt with this yesterday. Small world.
I went through this last year. We compared GitHub Copilot Individual vs ChatGPT Plus vs just using Python 3.12.3, but honestly, it was all sooo disappointing. Copilot was too complex, ChatGPT gave wrong answers, and the basic editor was basically just too boring... not great. Quick tip: we found that sticking to platforms with student modes is really the only way to keep things safe and educational.
Bump - same question here
Bookmarked, thanks!
