Ive been working with LLMs and prompt engineering for my job for like three years now so I thought I had a handle on this stuff but man, trying to find something actually educational for my 8-year-old is a total nightmare. My logic was that since hes already using Scratch and knows the basics of logic blocks hed be ready for some basic generative AI stuff or at least something that teaches the underlying mechanisms but everything I find is either too corporate or way too black box where they dont explain anything.

Ive got about a week before his future of tech project is due at his school here in Seattle and Im getting pretty desperate to find a tool that isnt just a glorified chatbot. I was looking into some platforms but honestly half of them look like they were built in 2005 and the other half are just wrappers for GPT-3.5 with a cartoon skin and a ridiculous price tag. Im fine spending maybe 40 or 50 bucks for a good subscription but it needs to actually be a learning tool, not just a way for him to cheat on his homework.

Ive considered things like:

• Khanmigo (seems okay but maybe too guided?)
• Teachable Machine (we did this, he got bored after he trained it to recognize his dog)
• Various AI art generators for kids (mostly just filtered Stable Diffusion which feels risky)

What am I missing? Is there like a sandbox environment where a 3rd or 4th grader can actually see how weights work or how a prompt is tokenized in a way that makes sense? I dont want him just clicking generate over and over. I need him to understand the why behind the output before this project is due next Thursday. If anyone has used a platform that actually bridges that gap between toy and technical for that elementary age group please let me know. I tried showing him the OpenAI playground but the UI is way too dense for a kid and I dont want him stumbling into settings he doesnt understand yet...
