What AI tools are actually good for middle school homework because I am literally at my wits end with my 7th grader's math? We tried ChatGPT but it just gives the answers and he's not learning anything plus it gets the math wrong half the time anyway which is just great. Im trying to help him with this algebra packet due Friday and I can barely remember how to do it myself honestly. I need something that actually explains the steps instead of just doing it for him. My budget is pretty tight so I cant really spend more than like 15 bucks a month on a subscription right now. Any of you guys found something that isnt just a cheating machine?

^ This. Also, if you're worried about the accuracy and the cheating factor, you should check out Khan Academy Khanmigo AI Tutor. Most of the free AI bots like ChatGPT are just word predictors and they're notoriously terrible at actual logic, which is why they mess up 7th-grade algebra so often. Khanmigo is different because it's built on top of the Khan Academy framework. It doesnt just give the answer away. If your kid asks for the solution, the bot basically says "nice try, but lets look at the variables first" and forces them to work through the logic themselves. It's about 9 dollars a month last I checked, so it fits your budget easily. I like it because it keeps a chat log that parents can review, which is a huge deal for safety and making sure they aren't just messing around. It feels more like a supervised study session than a shortcut. Honestly, most AI is too helpful in a bad way, but this one is tuned to be a bit more stubborn and pedagogical. It's a solid middle ground between a human tutor and a search engine. Just make sure he actually reads the prompts instead of just clicking through, tho that's always the struggle with middle schoolers lol. My experience aligns with yours entirely and I have been struggling with this for about two months now.
- I have investigated numerous platforms and they all fail at providing consistent, step-by-step logical guidance for 7th grade math.
- It is quite frustrating that most current options either hallucinate the logic or simply provide the answer without any actual teaching. Basically, I'm still searching for an answer myself and havent found anything yet.

Late to the party but I totally get the frustration with math... honestly it feels like a different language sometimes. I think I heard someone mention that some of the big educational platforms are rolling out specialized AI tutors that basically refuse to give the answer straight away. Not sure if those are totally free or if they hide the good stuff behind a paywall tho. I would suggest being a bit careful because general bots can hallucinate math solutions pretty easily. Here is what I think might help:
- Look for tools that specifically focus on step-by-step logic instead of just solving
- IIRC some sites have a tutor mode you have to manually toggle on to stop the easy answers
- Check if they handle algebra specifically well, since some are better at basic arithmetic Like someone mentioned, you really need that explanation bit. Hope you survive the packet!
