I have no idea where to start with all this AI stuff so sorry if this is basic... but I was thinking maybe an app could help my son with his algebra homework before his test on Tuesday. My logic was that a phone could just scan the page? I saw some ads but got confused... which apps actually work?
I suggest trying Google Lens Homework Mode or Microsoft Math Solver App. Both provide free scanning and solid algebra steps. Theyre basically the best budget-friendly options that dont require subscriptions.
@Reply #3 - good point! Accuracy is everything. Weve seen some free options and the big names, but honestly I've been very satisfied with Cymath LLC Math Problem Solver Premium for my kids. Its super reliable and dont hallucinate like the others mentioned. It worked well for us last semester and kept things consistent, which is basically my main concern.
Just wanted to say thanks for everyone chiming in. Super helpful discussion.
Same setup here, love it
Ive tried many. Photomath Plus Subscription is basically the gold standard for algebra.
Found this thread late but I gotta jump in because I've seen so many people get burned by these apps lately! I've been using AI tools for years and honestly it's been a wild ride. My biggest warning for your son is that these apps can totally hallucinate sometimes. Like, they'll give a super confident answer that looks perfect but the logic is completely broken halfway through. Tbh if he just copies the steps without checking them against his textbook he's gonna fail that test on Tuesday for sure. I've seen kids get 100 on homework then a zero on the exam because the AI was doing the heavy lifting and they weren't actually learning the why behind the algebra. Also watch out for the free ones that look kinda sketchy. A lot of them are just ad-farms that track everything your phone does or they hide the actual explanations behind a massive paywall after you've already scanned the page which is so annoying! Ngl I've spent way too much money on monthly subs that I forgot to cancel. My advice is to make sure he uses it as a tutor to check his work AFTER he tries the problem himself. Using it to skip the thinking part is basically a trap. It's amazing when it works but it's not a magic wand... just gotta stay careful with the hidden costs and the accuracy. Stay away from those apps that promise free answers but then spam your notifications with junk. Its just not worth it.
