I’ve been seeing a lot of buzz about using AI in the classroom lately, and I’m really curious to try some out with my third graders. However, my biggest priority is definitely student safety and data privacy. I'm specifically looking for platforms that are COPPA-compliant and don't require kids to share personal info to get started. I’ve looked at a few general tools, but I'm worried about the lack of guardrails for younger kids. Does anyone have experience with AI tools that focus on subjects like reading or basic logic while keeping the environment 100% kid-proof? Which specific platforms have you found to be the most reliable and secure for 7-10 year olds?

Similar situation here - I went through a whole saga last year trying to find stuff for our 3rd-grade lab that wouldn't break the bank or get me in trouble with the privacy board. Honestly, it is a bit of a minefield because so many "free" tools are basically just data harvesting sites in disguise, which is highkey terrifying when you're dealing with 8-year-olds.
Basically, the way I see it, if the tool doesn't have a clear "Educational" or "Student" version, it's probably not safe. I spent hours reading privacy policies (boring, I know) and realized that for elementary, you really need that COPPA compliance baked in. I looked into Khan Academy Khanmigo first because their guardrails are solid, but it can be pricey depending on your school’s budget. I mean, it's GREAT for logic and math, but the cost per student is something to watch out for if you're paying out of pocket.
I found that MagicSchool AI was a bit more budget-friendly for our district. They've got this MagicStudent feature that lets you launch activities without kids needing to create accounts. That was the big win for me—no personal info, just a join code. PLUS, it keeps them within a walled garden so they aren't wandering off into the weird parts of the internet. Another one I tried was Curipod for creative writing. It's super engaging and keeps things light. Just make sure to ALWAYS use a teacher-controlled dashboard... it gives you that extra layer of oversight. Idk, it’s a lot of work to vet these, but keeping it anonymous is definitely the way to go. Coming in a bit late but ive been testing a few of these lately. Just wondering tho, are you planning on having the kids use the interface themselves, or are you just looking for AI to help generate the lesson plans? It changes the privacy requirements quite a bit... If they're gonna be using it directly, you might want to consider:
- Mizou AI for Classrooms
- This one is great because it lets you build specific bots that are locked to your curriculum, so kids cant really wander off. It seems way safer than most general tools imo.
- MagicSchool AI Platform
- They have a Rainforest student portal designed for privacy, but you still need to be careful and monitor the logs regularly. I would suggest checking the specific privacy agreements for MagicSchool AI Platform in your district first. Honestly, even with the safe ones, you gotta be careful about what data they might be training on. Better safe than sorry when it comes to 3rd graders.
