What are the safest AI tools for elementary school children?

Hi everyone! My 8-year-old has been hearing a lot about AI at school lately and is really eager to try out some of these tools himself. As a parent, I’m excited about the educational potential, but I’m also pretty nervous about the safety side of things. Most of the popular models like ChatGPT or Midjourney seem geared toward adults and don't always have the strictest filters for younger kids.

I’m specifically looking for recommendations for AI platforms that are COPPA compliant and designed from the ground up for the elementary age range (roughly 7-11 years old). Privacy is my biggest concern—I'd prefer tools that don't require personal data or a kid's email address to function. I’ve looked into a few story-generating apps, but it’s hard to tell which ones are actually moderated and which ones might accidentally produce something inappropriate. We’re mostly interested in tools that help with creative writing, basic coding, or just answering those endless 'how does the world work' questions in a safe environment.

Has anyone found any specific AI-powered apps or websites that you actually trust for your kids? I'd love to hear about your experiences or any specific features I should be looking for to ensure a safe experience!

Here's what I recommend: honestly, COPPA compliance is a total minefield. If your looking for something safe and free, check these out: * Mizou — lets you set strict guardrails for ur writing.
* Code.org AI Lab — basically the safest way to learn coding. Most of these dont require a paid ChatGPT Plus sub, which saves money and keeps data private. gl!

oh man, i totally get u!! i was lowkey in the same boat last month trying to help my younger cousin find something safe. honestly, i'm a bit of a techie but even i was worried about those adult filters failing since ChatGPT is basically the wild west lol. i spent way too much time researching specifications for privacy and found some great budget-friendly gems. for your situation, i definitely recommend checking out Khan Academy Khanmigo for Students. it's basically free now for most users in the US and it's built specifically for education with crazy strict safety guardrails. my cousin uses it for 'how the world works' stuff and it wont just give the answer—it guides them! another cool one is Mizou AI for Schools. it lets teachers (or parents) build custom bots that are 100% COPPA compliant. i was super happy with how easy it was to setup and it doesnt require a kid's email. plus, since it's geared for schools, there are literally NO weird ads. gl with the kiddo!

Seconding the recommendation above! You might want to consider Scratch—its free ($0), COPPA-compliant, and Honestly the safest way for kids to explore AI coding without sharing data tbh

To add to the point above: i actually disagree with relying on web-based platforms for kids because COPPA compliance often feels like a moving target. after testing a few of the cloud tools mentioned, i realized i couldnt trust their backend updates to stay consistent or safe tho.

  • i ended up building a small local server using some spare parts and a graphics card with decent VRAM.
  • this setup lets me run everything offline so no data ever hits a server i dont control.
  • i found that local models are way more predictable because the filters dont change overnight without me knowing. it took me a weekend to get the environment stable and figure out the right quantization levels to keep it snappy, but the reliability is night and day. i dont have to worry about a cloud company changing their privacy policy or an update breaking the safety guardrails i spent time testing. for me, the hardware investment was way better than trusting a subscription service.
