honestly fed up with trying to find a decent AI for my 8-year-old to use for her school project. I let her use ChatGPT for five minutes to look up stuff about local birds here in Oregon and it already started giving her weirdly dark answers about extinction that really upset her. Its just too much to filter everything manually and I'm tired of these tools having zero guardrails for kids. I've looked at a few 'edu' versions but they're way too expensive for our budget.

what are the actually safe AI tools for elementary school children that wont show them inappropriate stuff or steal their data?

Caught this a bit late but i totally get the frustration. Most LLMs are basically trained on the entire internet so they stumble into dark territory way too fast for an 8 year old. Its a total mess trying to use general tools for school projects without constant supervision. To help find a decent middle ground, i have a couple quick questions about what you need:

  • Are you looking for a search replacement for facts, or more of a creative assistant for her writing?
  • Is your priority strictly on the content filtering, or are you also worried about the data privacy side of things? The tech ranges from simple web wrappers to fine-tuned models that are stripped of heavy topics. Once i know if youre looking for factual search or creative play, i can point you toward a few things that wont break the bank. Just let me know.
