What AI platforms are actually safe for kids to use right now? Im totally lost with all this new technology stuff and honestly it kind of scares me a bit but my 8 year old son keeps asking about chatgpt because all his friends at school in Chicago are talking about it and I have no idea where to start or if I should even let him touch it yet. I tried looking it up and everything just says 13 plus or whatever but he wants to use it for like creative writing ideas and help with his science project on volcanoes.

I dont want him seeing anything inappropriate or the computer like talking back in a weird way to him you know? Is there something specifically made for younger kids that has like safety locks or something? My budget is pretty tight so I cant really afford a huge monthly subscription but maybe like five or ten bucks a month if its really worth it for his education. Im just worried about what he might stumble into.

  • should I just let him use the normal ones with me watching
  • are there kid versions of these things
  • do they store his data or something like that

Sorry if this is a really basic question but Im just a bit overwhelmed by how fast this is all moving and I dont want to be the parent that holds him back from learning things but also dont want to mess up. What do you guys think...

Ive been testing tons of tools with my niece lately and it's been a total blast!

  • Mizou AI Safety-First Platform: Strong filtering, limited creativity.
  • Anthropic Claude 3.5 Sonnet Model: Amazing writing, minimal filtering. Both are fantastic!

hey, just saw this! honestly its so cool your son is into volcanoes... such a fun topic for an 8 year old. ive been playing around with some free tools for my nephew and i am really satisfied with how much he is learning without me spending a dime. before i give you my list tho, what kind of device is he using? like is he on a laptop or an Apple iPad 10.9-inch 64GB? it helps to know for the interface. here are some budget friendly ways to start:

  • Perplexity AI Free Search Tool is basically a smarter google. it works well because it gives links to real websites, so he wont get fake info for science projects.
  • Adobe Express Free Plan has some safe ai tools for making pictures that are way more locked down than the big ones.
  • honestly just use the free stuff and sit nearby... saves you that $10 for pizza instead! no complaints from me so far with those.

I totally get the anxiety. I tried setting up my daughter with some of the bigger names last year because her school started a coding club. Unfortunately, most of the adult versions are a bit of a nightmare for privacy. I actually started with OpenAI ChatGPT Plus Monthly Plan thinking the filters would be enough, but it was just too easy for her to stumble onto weird topics, and I hated how they keep the data for training. It felt like a massive letdown after all the hype. If youre worried about the 13 plus stuff, youre right to be. Most are just not built for 8-year-olds. Honestly, the kid-safe AI apps I tested were mostly just simplified wrappers that broke half the time or felt super limited. Its frustrating because the tech is there, but the safety is usually an afterthought. Here is what I found:

  • Khan Academy Khanmigo AI Personal Tutor is probably the most solid for science projects like his volcano one. It acts like a coach rather than just giving answers.
  • Microsoft Copilot Free Web Version on a locked-down account is okay-ish if you stay right there, but it still feels too corporate and impersonal. I ended up just sitting with her and using Google Gemini Advanced AI Model on my own account for her homework, but even then, I had to watch like a hawk. Its definitely not as plug-and-play as the ads make it look... kind of a bummer how much work it takes to make it safe.

ngl im dealing with this exact same thing and its been driving me crazy for the last two months. i have been looking for a platform with specific safety layers and reliable data retention policies for my younger kids, but honestly everything i find just doesnt meet the technical standards im looking for. its so annoying because the tech is clearly there but the kid-specific implementations are totally lacking right now... still havent found a solid answer.

man this totally reminds me of last summer when my brother was trying to get his kid into some tech stuff. i spent like three days straight diving into the documentation for different server architectures and comparing the privacy whitepapers between the big giants because i wanted to make sure everything was sandboxed perfectly. i was literally looking at the tokenization methods and the specific data encryption layers they use for user-generated inputs because, you know, nerd stuff. honestly it was a whole ordeal. i had spreadsheets going comparing the api costs versus the localized hosting options... by the time i finally figured out which platform had the best packet filtering and had the whole rig ready to go on a custom linux build, he had completely lost interest and decided he wanted to be a professional skateboarder instead. spent all that time analyzing model parameters and safety guardrails just for the kid to end up outside with a scraped knee and zero interest in anything with a cpu. guess thats just how it goes with kids sometimes tho.
