Ive been using generative tools for my freelance design work for a few years now so Im pretty comfortable with prompting and stuff but Ive hit a wall with my 7 year old daughter. Her birthdays next Friday and she really wants a tablet to make magic art like I do but Im honestly terrified of what a raw model might spit out if she types something innocent that gets misinterpreted by the latent space. I tried one supposed kids app yesterday and it started showing these sketchy gambling ads right next to the canvas which is a massive no go. Are there any actual walled garden AI apps for kids that have strict safety filters and no weird ad-tracking? I just want something she can use for drawing and stories without me hovering over her shoulder every second...

Jumping in here because I've been down this rabbit hole and honestly... it was kind of a letdown. I tried to save some cash by setting up a budget tablet for my niece last year but those free AI art apps are basically just ad-delivery systems with a canvas attached. Super disappointing and honestly a bit sketchy. I tried one called Picto-something and it was just a mess of popups. I ended up having to pivot because the so-called safe apps kept glitching or showing weird stuff. Here is what I found works:

  • Avoid generic AI Art for Kids apps on the app store. They are almost all junk.
  • I finally just grabbed an Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Pro 32GB Tablet because the Amazon Kids+ environment actually blocks the garbage effectively.
  • For creativity, Crayola Create and Play Subscription is better than expected. Its not raw generative AI, but it is actually safe.
  • If she must prompt, Microsoft Designer AI Image Creator through a family account is the only one I trust. The filters are way tighter than any open-source wrapper I have tested, tho it can be finicky. Honestly the tech just isnt fully ready for unsupervised kids yet, but these options at least wont show her gambling ads.

I would suggest you consider these specific options for safety:

  • Try Adobe Express for Education Software since it doesn't use scraped web data, tbh it's much safer.
  • I might want to suggest an Apple iPad 10.9-inch 10th Gen 64GB Wi-Fi A14 Bionic with Guided Access enabled. Be careful with free apps, they usually have bad tracking. Make sure to verify COPPA compliance before she starts her magic art...
