Im dying here with my calc final coming up next Tuesday and these practice problems are just brutal. I tried using Photomath because my roommate uses it all the time but it mostly just gives me the answer without really explaining the integration steps for these crazy word problems. Then I looked at Wolfram Alpha but the pro version is kinda pricey for a student budget and the free version is so limited now. I need something that actually walks through the logic because Im totally lost on the setup part of the equation. Are there any other apps out there that are actually good for like high-level college math and not just basic algebra? Im specifically stuck on multi-step volume integrals...
Building on the earlier suggestion, apps are basically risky for accuracy.
I went through the same thing last semester with calc 2. The setup is definitely the hardest part once you get past basic derivatives. Photomath is fine for quick checks but it falls apart on those multi-step volume integrals you mentioned because it doesnt really get the context of the word problem. Here are a few that actually help with the logic:
This is probably the most reliable for integration. It shows step-by-step breakdowns for free on the website mostly, though the app might ask for a sub. Its much cheaper than Wolfram and better at explaining why a certain substitution like u-sub or trig sub was used in that specific spot.
This one is completely free and surprisingly powerful for a student budget. It uses a mix of AI and a solver engine. Its decent for seeing the graph and the steps side-by-side which helps with visualizing those volume rotations... definitely helps when you cant see the 3D shape in your head.
If youre stuck on the setup part of a word problem, this is actually the best imo. You can literally type in the word problem and ask it to explain the logic for setting up the integral without just giving the answer. It can hallucinate numbers tho, so use it for the logic and then use Symbolab to check the actual math. Dont stress too much, once the setup clicks the rest is just grinding the algebra. You got this.
> Photomath is fine for quick checks but it falls apart on those multi-step volume integrals To add to the point above: honestly, these apps are usually a letdown for the hard stuff. I spent hours wrestling with one last semester and it just gave me nonsense for my disc method homework. OpenAI is probably your best bet because their models are way better at explaining the actual setup than any dedicated math scanner.
To add to the point above: I've been through this loop so many times and unfortunately, most tools are a huge letdown for the hard stuff. I paid for a monthly pass last semester for one of the big names, but it just gave me gibberish for my volume integrals. Super frustrating when you're on a budget.
