so i have been using claud and gpt-4 for my work for a couple years now so im pretty familiar with the tech side of things but ive hit a wall with my younger brother who is 12 and starting to struggle with his history papers. i really want to find him an ai writing assistant that isnt just a do my homework machine because that defeats the purpose right?

my logic was to find something that focuses on the brainstorming and outlining phase. i was thinking about just giving him access to my chatgpt plus account but honestly the safety filters and the way it just writes everything is too much for a middle schooler. i need something that guides him through the why of a sentence. ive been looking at things like quillbot or maybe some of the newer educational ones like curipod but i cant tell if they are actually good for kids or just flashy apps for teachers to use in class.

budget wise i can do maybe 15 bucks a month tops if it really helps him improve his flow and grammar but free options would be amazing since he needs this for a big science project due in three weeks. has anyone actually tried these with kids around that age group or am i overthinking it...?

> i really want to find him an ai writing assistant that isnt just a do my homework machine I totally get that worry. You might want to consider the Grammarly Free Version first. It focuses on grammar without just writing for him. Be careful with the big LLMs tho, they can be too tempting to copy-paste. Honestly, the free tier of QuillBot Free Plan is great for outlining flow without blowing your $15 budget... helps him stay in the driver seat.

Building on the earlier suggestion, I've been pretty disappointed with most AI. They usually just do the heavy lifting, which is basically useless for learning. Unfortunately, even the student ones can be unreliable... TL;DR: Try Khan Academy Khanmigo AI Tutor for $4 a month. This tool is the only one I trust because it focuses on questioning the kids logic instead of giving answers. Much safer than GPT-4 tho.

QuillBot is okay for brainstorming, but Hemingway Editor Desktop App is miles better for learning because it marks up the why of a sentence. My nephew just used QuillBot Flow Writing Assistant to rewrite everything without thinking. Be careful with those generative tools... Hemingway highlights passive voice and logic gaps so kids gotta fix it themselves.

To add to the point above: focusing on the why is honestly the only way to do this safely. In my experience with my own kids, giving them a blank check with a standard chatbot is basically asking for trouble. They just dont have the impulse control yet. I remember when my son was 12, he had a massive geography project. We ended up with a specific educational bot that was marketed as a socratic tutor. It was a total game changer because it wouldnt actually write a single sentence. It just kept poking holes in his arguments until he figured it out himself. What I learned from that:

  • Kids need friction to actually learn.
  • If its too easy, they are just training to be prompt engineers, not writers.
  • My current setup for him is way more restricted than what I use for my own work. Honestly, you should stay away from the big general ones. They are built for productivity, not pedagogy. Over the years, I have seen that the ones that focus on questioning logic are the only ones that actually help them grow... its about the process, not just the grade.

Ugh I am going through this exact same thing with my 7th grader and it is such a headache!! It is so stressful worrying about him just coasting through his history reports without actually learning the logic behind his writing. I have been looking at a few different paths and the struggle is real!!

  • Comparing MagicSchool AI Platform to the more generic Google Gemini Advanced Subscription has been eye-opening because the difference in safety is huge!
  • Dedicated school tools seem way better because they focus on the process, whereas the big LLMs just want to give the final answer which is what I am trying to avoid at all costs!
  • Finding something that acts like a tutor who nudges him rather than a ghostwriter is the priority. It is amazing how fast this tech is moving but also super scary as a parent... I totally feel your pain on this one! I am still trying to figure out which one provides the best guardrails so he doesnt just copy and paste his way to an A.
