Im losing my mind trying to organize my workflow lately. I spend basically my entire workday in Chrome doing research for my freelance marketing gigs, and since I started using ChatGPT for drafting copy and brainstorming campaigns, my browser tabs have just turned into a total disaster zone. I swear I have like fifty tabs open right now and half of them are just ChatGPT windows that I keep forgetting to close.
I was digging around on some subreddits and blogs earlier today and saw a bunch of people recommending Merlin and AIPRM. Merlin looks cool because it follows you around the browser, but honestly it feels a bit intrusive and the pricing tiers are kinda confusing for someone like me who is on a super tight budget—like, I really dont want to spend more than five bucks a month if I can avoid it. Then I saw AIPRM mentioned everywhere, but it seems more geared toward people who want to like, sell their prompts or something? I just want to be more efficient without adding a bunch of bloatware to my machine.
Here is what I actually need:
- Something that lets me access the chat history without hunting through my tab graveyard.
- Ability to summarize articles directly on the page, not just copying and pasting text into the chat box.
- Ideally free or a very cheap one-time payment, not a subscription.
- Privacy is a huge thing for me since I handle client data sometimes.
Am I missing something obvious? Are there simpler extensions that just sit in the background and dont try to take over my whole UI? I feel like every time I search for this I just get results for "top 10 AI tools" which are all just paid ads or affiliate junk. If anyone has one they actually use daily that isnt a massive headache, please let me know. I just want to get my work done and close my laptop for once...

Honestly, skip the bloat. I've been there with the tab graveyard, and honestly, the best approach is just using a sidebar.
- Microsoft Edge Sidebar AI is surprisingly good if you dont mind switching browsers, it keeps everything in one panel.
- Sider AI Assistant is my go-to for Chrome, it does summaries without all the intrusive junk. Sider is way less annoying than Merlin. Just install it and keep your tab count sane, seriously.

Had a moment to think about this more and totally get the frustration with tab clutter. If you want something lightweight that isnt gonna sell your data or bug you for subs, honestly, just stick to Harpa AI Chrome Extension or Monica AI Assistant.
- Harpa is honestly pretty solid because it runs locally for a lot of tasks, so it feels less like a privacy nightmare.
- Monica lets you highlight text right on the page, which saves you from that copy-paste dance you're doing. They both sit in a sidebar, meaning no more losing track of chats in fifty different tabs. It's way cleaner and usually works right out of the box without needing a PhD to configure. Just keep an eye on your permissions when you install stuff, obviously.

TL;DR: Grab Reader by Readwise instead of those clunky AI wrappers! Like someone mentioned, sidebars are cool, but this is way better for research. It strips out all the junk and lets you highlight directly into your notes. It is fantastic for privacy and costs way less than those subscription traps. Honestly, just use the native interface for chats and keep your research clean with this tool. Total game changer for marketing work!
