What are the best free ChatGPT browser extensions for Chrome?

I have been using ChatGPT quite a bit lately for both work and general browsing, but I am finding it a bit tedious to constantly switch between my open tabs and the official OpenAI website. It feels like I am wasting a lot of time copy-pasting text back and forth just to get a quick summary or some help with an email draft.

I have started looking into Chrome extensions to help streamline this, but honestly, the Web Store is a bit of a mess. There are dozens of options, and it is hard to figure out which ones are actually worth the storage space. I am specifically looking for tools that provide a handy sidebar for quick queries or perhaps something that can summarize long-form articles and YouTube videos directly on the page.

My main concern is that many of these extensions claim to be free but then hit you with a very low daily message limit or hide the best features behind a subscription. I am hoping to find something that is genuinely free or at least generous with its basic tier. I have heard names like Merlin and Monica mentioned, but I would love to get some real-user feedback before I start installing things.

Does anyone have a go-to free ChatGPT extension that they use daily and would recommend for someone trying to be more productive?

In my experience, i think it is super important to understand how these tools actually work before you just start giving them access to your browser data. basically, these extensions inject code into every page you visit so they can read the text and summarize it for you. that is a massive privacy risk if the developer is sketchy, and honestly, i have had issues with a few that felt like they were just data scrapers in disguise. plus, as you noticed, the free labels are often a total lie... it is sooo annoying to install something and find out you only get like 5 messages a day before they lock you out. it is lowkey exhausting. if you want something that actually sticks around without being too annoying, here is what i recommend looking into:

  • Harpa AI
  • Chrome Automation Agent is probably the most technically solid one i have found. it handles those youtube summaries and email drafts you mentioned perfectly, and it does not feel like as much of a cash grab as the others, tho the interface is a bit clunky at first.
  • Sider
  • AI Sidebar with GPT-4o and Claude 3.5 is actually pretty decent for the sidebar workflow you want. it is super polished and easy to use, but iirc the free daily limit is still kinda stingy.
  • Monica
  • Your AI Copilot is one you mentioned, and it is okay i guess, but i had issues with it being way too pushy with the pro upgrades. tbh i am still a bit disappointed with the market because everyone is trying to monetize so aggressively right now. i would suggest starting with Harpa AI
  • Chrome Automation Agent if you dont mind a slight learning curve... it feels a bit safer and more robust than most of the junk on the web store. gl!

For your situation, finding a legit free one is a total headache cuz most are just trial traps. I've had issues with tools being way too restrictive... but if you want value without constant paywalls check these:

  • Harpa AI Chrome Extension - best for automation, basically $0 for local runs.
  • Sider ChatGPT Sidebar and File Analyzer - 30 queries daily for free.
  • MaxAI.me AI Extension - solid summary tool. Good luck navigating the mess!!

In my experience, the best ones stay in a sidebar. I spent three years dealing with that copy-paste mess until i found my current setup... it basically handles my youtube summaries and emails instantly. it honestly saved me like 5 hours a week and i dont even think about it anymore. look for something with a persistent side panel that doesnt throttle you, works way better tho!! gl!

No way, I literally just dealt with this yesterday. Small world.

^ This. Also, it's honestly infuriating how many extensions claim to be free but are basically just demos that lock you out after ten minutes. Ive tried so many over the years and its a total time sink.

  • Monica AI Assistant
  • Really sleek sidebar, but that daily limit is a joke if you're actually doing real work. Feels like they're constantly baiting you to upgrade.
  • Merlin AI Extension
  • YouTube summary feature is actually decent, but the UI is cluttered and the pro ads are way too aggressive.
  • Compose AI Extension
  • Decent for drafting but it lacks the depth of a full sidebar tool. Basically, you're always trading privacy or sanity for these free tiers. Just exhausting trying to keep up with which one hasnt nerfed their plan this week...

tbh the web store is a minefield. i spent weeks trying to find something that wouldnt lock me out after three clicks. if you want something actually useful, check out WebChatGPT Internet Access Extension. it basically gives the free version of chatgpt the ability to search the web which is huge and keeps things accurate. for the sidebar and summary stuff, i shifted over to Glarity YouTube Google Summary Extension lately. it stays pretty quiet until you actually need it and the free tier is way more generous than the big names everyone talks about. definitely helps with the whole copy-paste fatigue... also pro tip, just keep a pinned tab for the main site as a backup. helps when the extensions get buggy after a chrome update. keep it light so your browser doesnt crawl tho.
