I've been scouring the dev forums and some people on X are saying we might get Claude 5 Sonnet by December but then I read a blog post claiming Anthropic is prioritizing the full 3.5 series first which makes me think a version 5 could be way later like mid-2025. Its super confusing because they dont really do roadmaps. I'm trying to plan out my dev cycle for this new app I'm building in Austin and I'm really torn on whether to hold off.

My main needs:

  • better handling of 200k+ context windows
  • staying under a $400 monthly spend
  • needs to happen before my January launch

Anyone heard anything more concrete lately?

Maybe in this summer.

Hard agree with everyone saying January is a no-go for Sonnet 5! Anthropic usually takes their sweet time to polish things and honestly, I love that they prioritize safety and quality even if it drives us devs crazy waiting! I went through this exact same panic last year while comparing different brands for my setup. I was pushing 250k tokens regularly and the bills were absolutely terrifying at first! Here is what I learned from my deep dive into the data:

  • My current setup handles the needle-in-a-haystack tests way better than I expected for the price point!
  • I managed to keep my monthly spend around $350 by being super aggressive with prompt caching which is a total lifesaver for big contexts.
  • Mixing models from different brands actually saved my project because one handled the heavy lifting while a smaller one did the quick summaries. It was a huge learning curve but totally worth it! Seriously, dont wait for a model that doesnt exist yet or youll miss your launch window... just get building with what works today!

Like someone mentioned, January is basically impossible for Claude 5. Unfortunately, Anthropic has been slow with scaling and their current context handling is not as good as expected for 200k plus windows tbh.

  • Google Gemini 1.5 Pro API 2M Context Gemini is really the only reliable move for that massive context size if you are launching that soon.

Honestly super happy with Anthropic Claude 3.5 Sonnet API lately. It handles context well.

  • cheap pricing
  • solid reliability Dont expect 5 before January tbh.

Been thinking about your question and honestly @Reply #2 - good point! The consensus here is pretty clear: Claude 5 before January is a pipe dream. I learned this the hard way last year when I delayed a launch for a model update that took six months longer than rumored. It totally wrecked our burn rate and we had to pivot mid-sprint. If youre trying to stay under $400 while processing 200k tokens, you need to be really careful. Most models get hallucination heavy once you cross that 128k threshold. My advice is to focus on what is actually available now.

  • stick with stable models for your January build
  • check DeepSeek-V2.5 API for lower costs on long context
  • try Mistral Large 2 128k if you can optimize chunks I would suggest building for what exists today. If you wait for a December miracle, you basically wont make your launch.
