Do I need a PhD to work in generative AI?

Is a PhD actually a dealbreaker for getting into gen AI roles? Ive seen some threads on LinkedIn saying you definitely need one for research, but others mention people jumping in with just a masters or a solid portfolio. Im currently in London trying to switch into the field and dont have the budget for another 4 years of school, so Im just kinda confused if the degree is just a filter or a real requirement for most companies...

Building on the earlier suggestion, you really dont need the PhD unless youre doing pure academic research. Unfortunately, the market is flooded with overqualified people, but most companies just care about what you can ship. Honestly, dont waste your money on tuition when you can build a lab at home for cheap.

Adding my two cents here, you absolutely dont need that degree to break in! A PhD is often just an expensive gatekeeper for pure research roles. Just dont fall into the trap of only following generic tutorials, because companies really want to see custom projects that actually work. What is your current coding background like, are you more into the math side or building apps?
