I am honestly so stressed out right now because my 9 year old daughter is begging to use that chat gpt thing for her science project and i have no idea what i am doing. I am really not a tech person at all and every time i try to search for stuff i just get more confused and overwhelmed with all the options. I keep hearing scary things on the news about AI saying weird stuff and i just want her to be safe while she learns. We are currently moving houses so money is tight and i cant spend a fortune on subscriptions. Are there any actual safe AI tools or websites specifically for elementary school kids that wont show them anything bad? I feel so dumb asking this but i really dont know where to even start...

You gotta check out Khan Academy Khanmigo AI Tutor! It's amazing and basically built for safety. TL;DR: Ngl its a safe, affordable tutor that wont show her anything bad!

^ This. Also, coming back to this because I totally get the stress! I remember when my niece had to do a project on the water cycle and i was hovering over her shoulder like a hawk lol. We eventually found Mizou AI Chatbot Platform for Education and it was honestly such a game changer for us. Its basically a safe space where kids talk to AI bots that are strictly limited to school topics. Here is why i love it:

  • Completely free for the basic stuff which is perfect when money is tight.
  • The guardrails are insane, it wont talk about inappropriate stuff.
  • It helps them learn instead of just doing the work for them. It takes all the anxiety out of the process tbh. Since youre moving, you dont need more stress on your plate! Just let her try the Student side of things and see how she likes it... it's seriously amazing!

Late to the party but I've tried many tools over the years and Microsoft Copilot AI Assistant is a reliable choice when money's tight. It provides the same intelligence as ChatGPT but with more robust safety layers for kids. In my experience, setting the browser to strict mode makes it very safe for science research. It's free and straightforward for non-tech users.
