Sorry if this is a super dumb question but im totally lost. I keep seeing ads for AI language apps but honestly have no clue how they even work or which ones arent just scams. Im trying to learn basic Italian before my trip to Rome this summer so I have a few months I guess.

  • Needs to be cheap or have a decent free tier because im on a tight student budget
  • Must be easy to use since im really not a tech person
  • Would love something that actually helps with speaking and not just flashcards

Is there anything legit out there that wont break the bank? I just dont know where to start...

Honestly, if you want something that actually forces you to speak rather than just tapping buttons, you should check out ELSA Speak AI Language Tutor. It is super solid for pronunciation because the AI listens to your voice and corrects your Italian accent in real time. Another solid option is Memrise Learn Languages with Music, which uses actual clips of native speakers to help with conversational flow. It feels a lot more natural than the repetitive stuff you find elsewhere.

  • ELSA Speak AI Language Tutor is great for hitting those tricky vowels.
  • Memrise Learn Languages with Music helps you pick up slang you will actually hear in Rome. Most of these have a free tier that is perfectly fine for basic tourist phrases. Don't overthink it, just pick one and try it for a week.

^ This. Also, check out Busuu Language Learning App Premium. It connects you with native speakers who correct your writing for free. It is much better for real-world Italian than flashcards.

TL;DR: Go with Duolingo Super Subscription for the basics, but honestly, just use the free version! It is super easy and honestly kinda addictive for casual practice. If you really want to nail the speaking part, Pimsleur Italian Conversational Course is the gold standard for actually opening your mouth and talking. It totally saved me before my last trip to Rome! Seriously, just start today and dont overthink it.
