Hey everyone! I’ve been editing professionally for a few years now, primarily sticking to the Adobe suite and DaVinci Resolve. Lately, though, I’ve been feeling a bit overwhelmed by the sheer number of AI-powered tools hitting the market. I’m really looking to streamline my workflow because I’m spending way too much time on tedious tasks like manual color matching between different cameras and hunting through hours of footage for specific B-roll shots.
I’ve experimented with some of the built-in AI features in Premiere Pro, like the text-based editing, which is great, but I’m wondering if there’s something more robust or specialized that I’m missing. Are you guys actually using tools like Runway for generative effects or Descript for high-end client work, or are they still a bit too "gimmicky" for professional delivery? I need something that handles 4K high-res footage smoothly and offers precise control rather than just automated, one-click filters.
I'm curious if these tools can actually replace part of the manual craft or if they are just for quick social media clips. Does anyone have a "holy grail" AI tool or plugin they use for professional-grade projects that truly saves hours of work without sacrificing quality? Would love to hear your experiences!
Sooo, I totally feel u on the AI burnout. Honestly, I learned my lesson the hard way last year when I tried to use an automated cloud tool for a 4K client delivery... the compression just killed the bit-depth and it looked like trash on a big screen. Basically, for professional-grade stuff, I'd suggest sticking with tools that integrate directly into your NLE rather than external "gimmicky" sites. In my experience, DaVinci Resolve Studio 19 is basically the only 'holy grail' that holds up to 4K scrutiny. Its Neural Engine features are actually stable: 1. Magic Mask: Literally saves hours on rotoscoping without losing edge precision.
2. Shot Match: It's a great starting point for color, but make sure to still use your scopes cuz it can occasionally clip blacks.
3. Topaz Video AI 5: If u need to save low-res b-roll or fix motion blur, this is the only one I trust for professional upscaling. But yeah, be careful with generative tools... they often lack the precise control we need for high-end delivery. Lesson learned: AI should be your assistant, not the pilot. gl!
For your situation, I'd suggest FilmConvert Nitrate. its basically a lifesaver for matching 4K footage without that gimmicky look... definitely worth the investment imo!
Had a moment to think about this more and honestly, I feel u on the overwhelm. In my experience, I’ve found that being super cautious with AI is the way to go for high-end client work. I’m pretty satisfied with my current setup, but I lowkey stay away from those flashy cloud tools for 4K stuff because I’m always worried about bit-depth and compression. Last year, I tried a popular AI tool for a background replacement and it *literally* fell apart during the grade—the noise was just terrible. Here is what I’ve learned:
1. Stick to the tools that live inside ur editor. I use the built-in transcription for everything now, and it’s been a life-saver for finding B-roll. It’s reliable and doesnt mess with the raw files.
2. I prefer specialized plugins for things like color matching or denoising. You get way more precise control which is basically essential for professional delivery.
3. tbh, the generative stuff like Runway still feels a bit gimmicky for high-end projects. It’s fun for social clips, but i wouldnt trust it for a big delivery yet. Lesson learned: AI is amazing for organization, but I'm still wary about letting it touch the actual pixels too much... better safe than sorry! 👍
Quick question - r u editing RAW or proxies? Before I give advice, I gotta know if safety is ur top priority. For color, Colorlab.ai vs fylm.ai is the big debate! Colorlab is faster for matching, but fylm.ai has better ACES color science. Both beat the 'gimmicky' stuff for high-res 4K safety. Ngl, they're the best choices for pro work. What's ur GPU setup like tho??
Facts.
Just catching up on this thread and honestly - as someone who manages a small studio
Adding my two cents here because I just went through a nightmare trying to get a new AI plugin to work with my current setup. Honestly, the biggest thing I didnt realize as a beginner with these tools is how much the technical compatibility side can bite you. I thought I could just plug and play, but I was so wrong!!! Here are a few things that happened to me:
I totally agree with HebridesIsles, the technical compatibility side of these AI tools is an absolute joke right now. Honestly it drives me crazy how these companies charge hundreds a year for subscriptions while giving us software that feels like a pre-alpha mess. Like, you check the dev logs and there is zero mention of specific CUDA toolkit requirements or Python environment conflicts, but then you try to render and your whole system hangs because of a memory leak they didnt bother to patch. Its such a scam. We are expected to have 24GB of VRAM just to run a basic upscaler that barely handles high-bitrate 4K without artifacting? The lack of optimization is just ridiculous... it feels like they are just wrappers for open-source models with a flashy UI and a pro price tag slapped on. Its honestly exhausting trying to keep a stable environment when every minor OS update or driver tweak breaks the entire pipeline. They just dont care about professional stability anymore, they just want that recurring revenue and it makes my blood boil.
Yep been there done that. Can confirm everything said above is spot on.
Any updates on this?
Lol I was literally about to post the same thing. Glad someone else brought it up.
