Im so sorry if this is a dumb question but I am totally lost. Im moving to Tokyo for a job in three months and I literally know zero Japanese. I tried a few free apps but they dont seem to get me anywhere with actually speaking. I keep hearing about AI apps that can help you reach fluency faster but there are so many options and I dont want to waste money on something that doesnt work. My budget is like 50 bucks a month max. Which one of these actually helps you hold a real conversation? Is there anything that can help me prepare before I get on the plane in 90 days?

Honestly, three months is a super tight window but you can definitely pick up enough to survive if you grind. Dont bother with those gamified apps that just make you click pictures of apples, because they wont get you speaking. You really need something that forces you to form sentences out loud. I would suggest jumping straight into Speechling Unlimited Membership because it actually has human-verified feedback on your recordings, which is huge when you are trying to fix your accent before landing in Tokyo. Another one that helped me a ton is LanguaTalk AI Tutor Subscription, which uses a legit AI to simulate real conversations. It feels kinda awkward at first but you gotta push through that. Just make sure to be careful with apps that only focus on flashcards because reading kanji is totally different from actually ordering ramen. If I were you, I would spend 30 minutes every morning on Pimsleur Japanese Level 1-5 Audio Course just to get the rhythm of the language down. Just watch out for burnout though, try not to overdo it in the first week. You should also consider finding a tutor on a platform like iTalki 1-on-1 Language Lessons once a week just to practice the stuff you learned from the AI. Its gonna be a wild ride but youve got this!

Regarding what #1 said, its totally true about the gamified apps, but unfortunately I had issues with AI voice recognition latency. If you want real conversational data, check these out:

  • ChatGPT Plus Subscription 4o Model gives great real-time voice practice.
  • Glossika Japanese Fluency 1-3 handles sentence structures way better than others. Basically, dont rely on just one. Using both might actually get you ready for Tokyo.

Like someone mentioned, those basic apps wont cut it for Tokyo. In my experience over the years, you need to simulate the pressure of a real chat. Not sure if you've looked into this, but forcing yourself to output audio is the only way to build muscle memory fast.

  • Try finding a tandem partner for daily calls
  • Record your own voice to catch mistakes
  • Dont overthink the grammar; just focus on being understood
