Which AI tool is better for language learning: Duolingo or ChatGPT?

I’ve been using Duolingo for a while to learn Spanish, but I’m starting to feel like I’ve hit a plateau with just memorizing phrases and vocabulary. I recently tried practicing conversation with ChatGPT, and it’s surprisingly good at explaining grammar rules and roleplaying real-life scenarios. However, I miss the gamified structure and streaks that keep me motivated on Duo. I’m curious if anyone has successfully switched over to using AI models exclusively, or if you think ChatGPT is better used as a supplement for speaking practice. For someone trying to reach B2 fluency, which tool do you think is more effective in the long run?

Hmm, I've had a different experience when it comes to relying solely on these tools for B2 fluency. Respectfully, I'd consider another option because Duolingo is basically just a game for vocab, and while ChatGPT Plus is great for technical explanations, it lacks a structured curriculum designed by linguists.

To actually hit B2 without wasting time, you kinda need a more technical stack:
1. Use Anki for Spaced Repetition (SRS)—it's way more efficient for long-term retention than Duo's streaks.
2. Get a specialized platform like Babbel for actual grammar progression.
3. Use the GPT-4o model for roleplaying specific scenarios, like a doctor's visit or a job interview.

Basically, ChatGPT is an incredible supplement but a poor foundation cuz it can "hallucinate" grammar rules sometimes. It's highkey better to use it to stress-test what you've learned elsewhere. Does that make sense? gl with the Spanish journey!

sooo i stumbled upon this discussion and i totally feel u on that plateau. honestly, it kinda comes down to what ur willing to spend and how u like to study. duolingo is great cuz it's free (mostly), but if ur aiming for B2, it's just not gonna get u there alone.

Here's what I recommend based on value:

- Duolingo Free Version: Best for keeping the habit alive without spending a dime. The streaks are addictive, but it's basically just a vocab game at the end of the day.
- ChatGPT Plus: This is the real MVP for B2 prep. It's about $20/month, which is way cheaper than a tutor. Use the Voice Mode to roleplay ordering food or arguing about a bill in Spanish. It actually corrects ur grammar in real-time if u ask it to.

I mean, if u want to reach B2 without breaking the bank, i'd say use the free version of Duo for 5 mins a day just to keep the streak, but spend 30 mins actually talking to ChatGPT Plus. It's way more effective for real-world fluency cuz u have to think on ur feet. Plus, u can ask it to explain "por vs para" like a million times and it wont get annoyed lol. idk but for me, the cost of the Plus subscription is worth it for the speaking practice alone. gl with the Spanish journey!! 👍

yo! honestly, i feel u on that plateau. i was stuck in the duolingo loop for like two years and felt amazing cuz of my streak, but then i actually tried to speak to a real human and... basically forgot everything. lol.

For your situation, i would suggest using ChatGPT Plus as your main driver for B2, but seriously, dont drop the duo just yet. i tried going 100% AI and it was kinda exhausting cuz there's no structure. i mean, you gotta be really self-disciplined to prompt yourself every day!

what worked for me was using Duolingo for like 10 mins in the morning just to keep the habit alive and get that easy vocab fix. then, i spent the "real" study time doing roleplays on ChatGPT-4o (the voice mode is literally a game changer!!). i tell it "hey, act like a grumpy waiter in Madrid" and it gets sooo intense.

One thing tho—be careful with grammar explanations from AI. it's usually fantastic, but i have seen it hallucinate rules once or twice. if something sounds wierd, i always double-check with SpanishDict or a proper textbook. reachin B2 is highkey about immersion, and ChatGPT is the closest thing to a 24/7 tutor without paying $30 an hour. so yeah, use it as your primary practice tool but keep duo for the dopamine hits. gl with the spanish! 👍

Story time: I actually tried going *full* AI last year for Italian B2 prep, but honestly? It was kinda risky.

- ChatGPT vs Duo: ChatGPT is way better for nuances, but be careful because it *definitely* hallucinates grammar rules sometimes.
- The cost: Paying for Plus gets expensive long-term compared to free apps.
- Safety: I once spent a week learning a phrase that was totally wrong lol.

I guess I'd say use GPT as a supplement but dont trust it blindly!!

@Reply #4 - good point! honestly i have the EXACT same struggle right now and it's been driving me insane for like the last three months!! i feel like i'm stuck in this weird limbo between the cute gamified world of Duolingo and the crazy deep conversations with OpenAI ChatGPT Plus.

  • literally can't decide which one is actually gonna get me to B2
  • keep hitting that same plateau where the owl feels too easy but gpt feels like a total brain workout
  • honestly just wanna wake up and be fluent already lol!! it's so frustrating because i love the energy of both tools but i'm just as lost as you are... i've been searching for a clear answer everywhere and still haven't found a routine that actually sticks... we're basically in the same boat and it's so tough trying to figure out which path is the real deal!

Just found this thread and man, i feel the frustration. Like someone mentioned, the jump from beginner to B2 is like hitting a brick wall and none of these companies seem to care about actually helping us over it. Honestly its ridiculous how much money we have to pour into these tools just to get halfway decent results.

  • Every single thing is a subscription now and the prices keep creeping up while the quality feels like its staying the same or even getting worse.
  • It feels like a total scam that we have to juggle three different apps just to learn a single language cuz none of them can do the whole job.
  • The big companies are so obsessed with streaks and gamification that they forget some of us actually want to talk to people, not just play a match-3 game with vocab. Its honestly exhausting trying to piece together a DIY study plan because the official paths are so broken. I spend more time managing my apps than actually practicing my Spanish lately... it drives me crazy.

No way, I literally just dealt with this yesterday. Small world.
