I’ve been really curious about diving into the world of artificial intelligence lately, but my schedule is pretty packed. I spend about 45 minutes each way on my daily commute, and I’d love to use that time to actually learn something productive instead of just mindlessly scrolling through social media.
I’m specifically looking for an app that breaks down the basics—things like how machine learning algorithms work, the logic behind neural networks, and maybe even a bit about how LLMs are trained—without getting bogged down in heavy math or complex coding right away. I’ve seen ads for platforms like Brilliant and DataCamp, but I’m not sure if their mobile experiences are actually solid or if they’re better suited for a desktop. I’m using an Android device and I'm totally fine with a small subscription fee if the quality is there, but I’d really prefer something with interactive, bite-sized lessons that I can easily finish between bus stops.
I tried reading a few intro books, but they’re just too dense to focus on in a noisy environment. Does anyone have a favorite mobile app that makes AI concepts easy to digest and actually fun to learn on the go?

Ok so basically, AI is just teaching computers to find patterns in data. It sounds super scary, but it matters because it's literally behind everything we use now! I'm still a beginner myself, so I'm always looking for ways to learn without spending a fortune or getting lost in the weeds.
You might find these options useful since you're watching ur budget:
- Khan Academy Android App: Honestly, this is the safest bet. It's totally free, so no risk of a subscription you'll forget to cancel. Their intro AI modules are really easy to digest in a noisy bus.
- Mimo: Learn to Code and AI: I've been really happy with this one! It’s basically the Duolingo of tech. It’s way more affordable than some others mentioned earlier, and the lessons are tiny.
I was kinda worried the math would be too much, but these keep it really simple. Ngl, I'd start with the free stuff first just to be safe... anyway, good luck with the commute!! 👍

TL;DR: Enki: Learn Data Science/AI ($8/mo) vs Brilliant.org Premium vs DataCamp: Learn Data Science. Enki is simplest; DataCamp is too technical. Best budget choice is Enki for ur commute tho!!

@Reply #5 - good point! Honestly, I've spent years trying to find the perfect mobile setup for this and mostly ended up disappointed. Most apps focus way too much on the gamification stuff and not enough on the actual logic, which is a huge letdown when you're actually trying to build a foundation. Unfortunately, I had issues with most lite AI apps because they treat you like a kid. Here's what I'd watch out for:
- Apps that use too many fill in the blank exercises. You feel smart but you're not actually learning to think.
- Platforms that hide the math completely. If they dont mention matrices or probability at all, they're probably just teaching you buzzwords.
- Subscriptions that lock the good projects behind a massive paywall. I basically went the DIY route eventually. Ngl, it's harder, but skipping the flashy UI and just reading documentation offline while on the bus worked way better for me. These apps can be a bit of a trap if you aren't careful...

Late to the party but I've been messing around with these learning platforms for a few years now. Honestly, I'm not 100% sure if there's one "perfect" app that hits every single point you want without any fluff, but I think you might want to consider Sololearn. Iirc, they added some specific AI and Machine Learning paths recently that are super bite-sized for a commute.
Ngl, a lot of people mention Brilliant or DataCamp (like the first reply said), and they're decent, but be careful with the technical jump—sometimes they go from 0 to 100 real quick. For your Android, maybe check out Mimo too? I think they started rolling out AI basics recently. It's kinda like Duolingo but for tech. Just make sure to check if they cover LLM training specifically, cuz that's a bit niche for these "intro" apps. They usually focus on high-level logic rather than the architecture. If your looking to maximize ROI on your commute without getting hit by heavy subscription fees, here are a few alternatives that offer better value: - LinkedIn Learning: Tbh, this is the industry standard for professional development. Pro tip: most public libraries offer FREE premium access with just a library card. Their 'AI Foundations' series is top-tier and way more polished than the indie apps.
- Google Cloud Skills Boost: They have a 'Generative AI Learning Path' that's basically the gold standard for intro-level LLM training right now. It's mobile-friendly via a browser and many of the fundamental badges are free.
- Mimo: Learn Coding/AI: This is the closest competitor to Sololearn but I find there lesson flow much more logical for absolute beginners. The market is PRETTY saturated right now, so dont get locked into a year-long sub until you've tried the library/Google options first (at least thats what worked for me).
