Which IDE extension provides the best integration for DeepSeek-Coder?

Which IDE extension is actually providing the most stable integration for DeepSeek-Coder right now? I have been a dev for over a decade and usually stick to VS Code but I am trying to move away from GitHub Copilot because the monthly sub is getting annoying and honestly the quality has been dipping for me lately. I just got my DeepSeek API key and I am ready to go but there are like a dozen different extensions in the marketplace and they all claim to be the best. I tried the Continue extension earlier today but the autocomplete lag was driving me crazy, maybe it was just my settings or some weird API bottleneck?

I am working on a complex fintech dashboard for a client in London and the deadline is literally this Friday so I dont have time to fiddle with JSON config files for five hours. I need something that just works out of the box with the v2 model. I am looking at stuff like Codeium, Continue, or maybe even those newer ones like Llama Coder or Aider if they work well inside the editor. I heard some people are using it via Ollama locally to save on tokens but my laptop (standard M2 Macbook) might choke if I run the full model while having 50 Chrome tabs and Docker running in the background.

Does anyone know which one has the best workspace awareness? I need the chat to actually understand the context of my whole project structure, not just the file I have open. A lot of these plugins claim to have RAG or codebase indexing but then they fail to find a basic function definition in another folder. I am really feeling the pressure here since I have to deliver the MVP in about 72 hours and I want to see if DeepSeek can actually speed up my boilerplate generation. Is there a specific extension that handles the v2 chat model properly without messing up the code block formatting or is it all still kinda experimental...

I shifted away from that monthly Copilot drain a while ago to save some cash. In my experience, Sourcegraph Cody AI Extension is the way to go if you want to keep costs down but still need actual codebase context. Over the years I've tried many setups, and Cody usually doesnt choke my M2 even with Docker running. Since you're on a tight Friday deadline, it's pretty plug-and-play for DeepSeek.

Honestly, if you're on a tight deadline and need actual codebase indexing, I have found Cline VS Code AI Extension to be the most reliable for DeepSeek-V2 integration right now. In my experience over the years trying different plugins, Cline handles project-wide context much better than the standard RAG implementations found elsewhere. It basically uses the DeepSeek DeepSeek-V2 API to scan your directory and plan changes across multiple files without you having to manually feed it context. Regarding the lag you saw in Continue.dev VS Code Extension v0.8, that usually happens if the autocomplete provider is set to a slow endpoint or a busy proxy. Since you are in a rush for that Friday deadline, I would skip the complex JSON tinkering. Cline has a very straightforward setup and it handles the v2 model properly without messing up code blocks. It is much more stable than running something like Ollama Local LLM Runner on an M2 Macbook when your RAM is already being eaten by Docker.

Look, if you are on a 72-hour deadline, stop fiddling with plugins that lag. In my experience, Codeium Individual IDE Extension is the way to go if you want something that just works. Their indexing is way more polished than Continue and it wont eat your RAM like some local setups. I've been doing this a long time and honestly, the DeepSeek API is so cheap it makes the Copilot sub look like a total scam. For actual project-wide context, Aider AI Pair Programmer is the king. It is a CLI tool but it syncs with VS Code perfectly. Its repo-mapping is actually reliable, unlike most RAG plugins that miss basic function definitions in other folders. Since you are on an Apple MacBook Air M2 13-inch 8GB RAM, using the API via Aider is much smarter than trying to run anything heavy locally. It will handle your boilerplate generation without breaking a sweat.
