I'm so lost right now and I have this project due on Monday for my intro class. I heard DeepSeek Coder is really good and free but I literally have no idea how to actually use it inside my editor... I use VS Code but when I search the extensions thing it shows so many options like Continue or some other ones and I'm just confused which one is actually the official one or just the easiest for someone who doesnt know what an API key is.

My logic was that it would just be one button but it's not and I'm panicking a bit because I need to get this set up tonight. Is there one that just works without me having to break anything?

  • I'm on a Mac
  • Budget is basically zero
  • Need it for Python stuff

Which one should I actually download so I don't waste time?

Over the years, Ive tried many of these tools, and Continue.dev Continue VS Code Extension is easily the most solid. Just grab the free API key from DeepSeeks dashboard and plug it into the config. It works flawlessly with Python on Mac. Its the only one I use these days because it just stays out of the way while you code. Definitely your best bet.

I saw this earlier and honestly just go with the extension made by the official team! It is totally amazing and way less of a headache than trying to configure those third-party tools when you are on a deadline. Just a huge warning tho... be super careful about which one you click in the marketplace! There are so many random clones that look legit but they are basically just bloatware or trying to trick you into a subscription. I love the official version because it handles the Python logic so well and actually stays free. Its super fast on a Mac too which is a massive plus. Honestly, dont waste your night trying to figure out API keys if you dont have to, just go straight to the source and get that project done! You got this!!
