Is cloud computing expertise necessary for an AI career?

So I am currently at a crossroads with my career path and need to make a move soon. I have been teaching myself Python and some basic machine learning models for about six months now, and I am trying to figure out how to best spend my limited free time. Im debating between going deep into AWS certifications, taking a specialized MLOps course, or just sticking to pure data science projects on my local machine. My budget is pretty tight since I am between jobs here in Chicago, so I dont want to waste money on cloud certs if they arent actually mandatory for entry-level roles. I see a lot of job postings asking for cloud experience but then other people say you just need to know the math and the frameworks. Is cloud computing expertise actually necessary for an AI career right now, or am I gonna be fine just building stuff locally and learning the cloud part once I actually land a gig?

Skip the certs for now! If you want to impress recruiters without spending cash, build a pipeline on a NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano 8GB instead. It gives you real hands-on experience with edge AI deployments which is huge right now. Seriously, just host your models locally using a Samsung 990 Pro 2TB NVMe SSD to handle those huge datasets. Show them you can ship production code, not just theory. You'll stand out way more than someone with a paper cert!

Like someone mentioned, certs are a money sink. Focus on open-source tools instead. Just get a Google Coral Dev Board 1GB to practice local inference without wasting cash on cloud bills.

Honestly, you can totally skip the expensive certs for now. I spent way too much time grinding for an Amazon Web Services AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate back in the day, and ngl, it was pretty underwhelming. It doesnt really show you how to actually build models, just how to navigate their clunky console. Unfortunately, most of these certifications are basically just resume padding that doesnt translate well to the actual grind of ML engineering. Save your cash and stick to your local machine for now. If you really need to simulate a production environment without going broke, just focus on learning Docker and basic Linux commands. That will get you way further than a shiny badge. Keep building stuff locally and honestly, just focus on the math and frameworks until you actually land a role that pays for your cloud training.
