I am trying to learn machine learning basics while commuting. I need something that works well on a phone for:

  • Python coding practice
  • Neural network explainers

I am overwhelmed by all the options and don't want to waste money. Could you recommend the top-rated apps for studying artificial intelligence today?

I totally get why people suggest those big-name apps, but honestly, I have to disagree on them being the best choice for someone watching their wallet. I've found that those monthly subscriptions like Brilliant add up way too fast, and sometimes you end up paying for the fancy UI rather than the actual depth of the content. For Python practice on the go, I'd suggest moving away from the quiz-style apps and getting a proper mobile IDE. I personally use Pythonista 3 for iOS on my phone, or if you are on Android, Pydroid 3 Educational Edition IDE is fantastic. They are either free or a small one-time cost, which is way better than a recurring drain on your bank account. You can actually write scripts and test logic while you're sitting on the bus, which is how the syntax really sticks. For the neural network side, check out Enki AI and Coding App Premium. They have a free tier that is actually useful, and if you do decide to upgrade, they run sales constantly. But my real secret for staying on a budget? Check your local library's website. A lot of them provide free access to the O'Reilly Learning Platform Subscription or LinkedIn Learning. You could be getting five hundred dollars worth of professional AI courses and textbooks for zero dollars just by using your library card. Definitely worth a look before you commit to a subscription!

Hey there! Learning on the commute is honestly how I got my start too. If you're looking for mobile apps that actually stick without feeling like a chore, I have a few go-tos that I still use today. For the theory and neural network stuff, you really can't beat Brilliant.org Premium Annual Subscription. It is super interactive and they have these visual modules on neural networks and logic that make sense even when you're on a bumpy bus. It is not just reading text; you are actually solving puzzles that build the intuition. It is a bit pricey but totally worth it for the ML and computer science tracks if you are serious about it. For the coding side, I have used Sololearn Python 3 Course for years. It has a built-in mobile IDE so you can actually run snippets of code while you are standing on the train. It is great for drilling the basics of Python syntax which you will definitely need before you touch stuff like PyTorch or TensorFlow. I would also recommend checking out Enki AI and Data Science Path. It feels more like a game with its daily streaks, and it covers some solid ground on data science basics. My advice is to start with the free versions of Sololearn and Enki first to see which UI fits your vibe, then maybe look into the paid version of Brilliant for the deep neural net explainers. Good luck with the commute study sessions!

It is smart to be cautious because there are way too many apps that just want your subscription money without offering much real depth. I have gone down that rabbit hole before and ended up frustrated. Before I suggest anything specific, I have a few questions to help narrow it down. Are you looking for a sandbox where you can actually type and run Python code on your phone, or are you more into the gamified, multiple-choice style of learning? Also, how much of the math do you want to get into? Some apps keep it very high-level while others expect you to understand the underlying linear algebra and calculus... knowing your comfort level there makes a huge difference in finding something that actually works for you.
