sorry if this is a dumb question but i have to read 50 papers for my history thesis by next friday and im drowning. i heard there are ai things that can summarize them for you? my logic was that it would save time but i have no idea where to start or if they cost money...
fifty papers by friday is a lot, honestly sounds like a total nightmare. i tried using ai for my own research projects last year and unfortunately it wasnt as good as i expected. most tools really struggle with historical nuance and i had issues with them totally missing the authors main thesis or even worse making up dates. you have to be super cautious because these things hallucinate and for a history degree that is basically academic suicide. if you really need to speed things up tho i would suggest looking at Elicit AI Research Assistant. it is probably the most reliable one i have found because it actually tries to map out the methodology and findings instead of just giving a generic blurb. they have a free version but you might need the pro tier if you are doing fifty files. i also used ChatPDF Plus Subscription for a bit. it costs fifteen dollars a month and lets you chat with the documents directly but its not always perfect at catching subtle arguments. another one is Consensus AI Search Engine which is decent for checking if other historians agree with a specific claim. just please promise you will skim the actual intros and conclusions yourself. these tools are okay for a first pass but they arent a replacement for your own brain yet... hang in there though, the thesis grind is brutal but you can do it.
There are tons of incredible options! I survived a similar crunch last year and it was totally amazing... pure chaos tho!
