What is the best affordable host for OpenClaw servers?

Does anyone have a solid recommendation for a cheap VPS or host that actually plays nice with OpenClaw without lag spikes every five seconds? Ive been running dedicated servers for years, mostly source engine stuff and some retro shooters, but I tried setting up a Claw session for my old gaming group this weekend and my current provider is just choking on it. I dont know if its the netcode or if their CPU priority is just that bad but it's unplayable and everyone is complaining about rubber-banding.

Im looking to spend maybe $7 or $8 a month max since it's just for 4-5 people and we only play on Saturdays. I tried a basic DigitalOcean droplet but the latency from Virginia was all over the place for my friends in the midwest even though the ping looked fine on paper. It's super frustrating because the engine is so light but it feels like the host is throttling the traffic or something weird is happening with the UDP packets.

  • Needs to be Linux friendly (Ubuntu 22.04 ideally)
  • Low jitter is a must because OpenClaw gets real twitchy if the connection isnt stable
  • East Coast or Central US servers

I'm kinda running out of time here because the session is supposed to be tomorrow night and I still dont have a stable box ready to go. Is there a specific host that handles these older engine ports better or am I just doing something wrong with the config...

I would suggest trying:

  • Vultr Cloud Compute Shared CPU 1GB RAM in Chicago Be careful with those cheap shared tiers tho, make sure to monitor cpu steal closely while you're playing.

I've been down this exact rabbit hole and it is so annoying when the ping looks low but the game feels like absolute trash! Honestly, Akamai Linode 1GB Nanode Shared CPU saved my life when I was running some retro sessions last month. I moved my stuff to their Newark node and the stability was night and day compared to DigitalOcean. The jitter just vanished. Their network is fantastic for UDP heavy games like OpenClaw because they dont throttle those tiny packet bursts as much. Here is what I found works best for these twitchy engines:

  • Grab the Hetzner CPX11 2 vCPU 2GB RAM Ashburn VA instance. It is like 5 or 6 bucks and the performance is incredible for the price. Ashburn connectivity to the Midwest is usually stellar.
  • Switch your congestion control to BBR on your Linux box. It works wonders on Ubuntu 22.04 for reducing bufferbloat. Just tweak your sysctl settings to use fq_codel and you'll see a massive difference.
  • Avoid those super cheap shared tiers on providers that focus on web hosting because the CPU steal is real and it kills game timing. I love how responsive Linode feels for dedicated servers. Seriously, dont bother with the overprovisioned providers because that is exactly where your rubber-banding is coming from. The $5 Nanode tier is more than enough for 5 people on OpenClaw. You totally got this for the session tomorrow night!
