so i've been spiraling a bit looking at all these ads for AI courses and i really need to start learning this stuff before i get left behind at work. my boss keeps bringing up LLMs in meetings and i just nod along but i have no clue how it actually works under the hood. i spend like 45 mins on the train to the city every morning so a mobile app is basically my only chance to study since my laptop is too heavy to lug around. i was looking at sololearn cause its cheap and i heard they have a python for data science track but then i saw datacamp has a dedicated ai fundamentals path. datacamp looks way more professional but its like 25 bucks a month which is a lot right now since i'm trying to save for a wedding in october. then theres brilliant which everyone talks about for logic but i dont know if it actually teaches the ai part or just the math... my logic was that maybe i should start with the free stuff on sololearn to see if i even get it but i'm scared i'll just waste time learning the wrong things. i need to be able to talk about this stuff intelligently by the end of the month for our next quarterly review. do you think datacamp is worth the splurge for a total beginner or is there a better way to do this on a phone?

I remember being in that exact spot a few years ago when my firm started pushing automation. I tried to go cheap with free apps but just ended up learning basic syntax while my coworkers were talking about neural networks... honestly it was pretty embarrassing in meetings. If you really have that month-end deadline, you gotta be careful with the free paths since they often skip the logic that actually matters.

  • Sololearn Pro Annual Plan: Its okay for basic Python, but honestly it feels like a game. You might learn how to write a loop but you wont understand how a transformer model actually functions.
  • DataCamp Premium Mobile Subscription: I used this for a promotion push. Its the most corporate, but their AI Fundamentals track is the best for getting those talking points ready for a review. Make sure to watch the auto-renew though.
  • Brilliant Premium App Subscription: Great for logic, but maybe too slow for a one-month turnaround. I would suggest just biting the bullet on DataCamp for a month. Its better to spend the cash than look lost in front of your boss.

To add to the point above: if youre really worried about getting the "under the hood" logic down for your boss, you should look at Coursera Plus Monthly Subscription. It is absolutely amazing! You can take the AI For Everyone course on your phone and it is basically the gold standard for learning how LLMs actually function without needing a PhD. I also love Enki App Pro Learning Path for technical drills. Its fantastic for building a reliable habit on the train! It feels way more professional than the basic free apps. DataCamp is still great too, but Coursera has that academic weight that helps you speak the language in meetings. Honestly, dont stress the wedding fund for just one month... its a total career investment! Ngl, the way DataCamp Mobile App Subscription structures their AI fundamentals is super safe for beginners too. You really cant go wrong with these!

Saw this earlier but just getting a second to type this out. Since you are trying to save for your wedding, you definitely dont need to be dropping twenty five bucks a month right away. I have been using a few cheaper things that get the job done without any complaints.

  • Khan Academy Free Mobile App is literally free and handles the logic side of things better than most paid apps. It works well for starting from zero without spending a dime.
  • Mimo Pro Annual Subscription is way more budget friendly than Datacamp. They have a decent AI track now and the lessons are short enough for a train ride.
  • Check if your local library gives you a free LinkedIn Learning Monthly Subscription. Most do, and it has tons of high quality AI for beginners content you can watch on your phone. Tbh you can get enough info to sound smart in your meeting just by sticking to these cheaper paths for now. Good luck with the wedding planning too...
