Which AI apps are actually safe for a 12-year-old to use for their middle school homework without me having to worry about what data is being sucked up? My son is starting to get way more complex social studies assignments and hes honestly struggling with how to structure his essays so I want to get him some help but Im really torn between a few options right now and dont want to just let him loose on the open internet.
I was looking at just getting a ChatGPT Plus subscription since it seems like the standard but then I saw some stuff about their data usage and got a bit freaked out honestly. Then there is Claude which everyone says is more ethical or whatever but is it actually better for a kid? I also keep seeing ads for Khanmigo from Khan Academy which is built for schools but its like $9 a month and I am not sure if it is as powerful as the big ones.
- ChatGPT (seems smart but maybe too much data tracking?)
- Claude (heard it is safer or more polite?)
- Khanmigo (cheaper and made for kids but maybe too limited?)
Our budget is about $20 a month max so I can really only pick one and I want to get this set up before his big term project starts next Tuesday. We live in a suburb where the school is pretty strict about AI use too so it needs to be something that teaches him how to write rather than just doing it for him. Anyone have experience with these or maybe a better one I missed...

Actually, I'd disagree with the others. I tested Perplexity Pro AI Search Engine and the citation engine reduces hallucinations... it is way safer for school research than generic chat.

honestly, after testing a bunch of these over the years for my own kids, i'd say go with Khan Academy Khanmigo AI Tutor Subscription. the $9 price tag is a total steal compared to paying $20 for something like the OpenAI ChatGPT Plus Monthly Subscription. in my experience, the big problem with tools like the Anthropic Claude 3 Pro Subscription is that it's way too easy for a middle schooler to just have it write the whole essay. khanmigo is different... it actually nudges them to think and helps with the outline rather than just dumping a finished paper. plus, from a budget perspective, you're saving half your monthly limit. for a 12 year old, the safety features on khan academy are way more robust for schoolwork. i've seen the bigger models give some weirdly mature answers sometimes and the data tracking is definitely a valid concern for parents. sticking with a platform meant for education is just safer and cheaper tbh...

Just saw this thread and man, I feel your pain. I tried setting up Google Gemini Advanced Subscription for my daughter but was honestly so disappointed... the privacy settings are a total maze and it felt like it was just scraping her data for training. Unfortunately, I had issues with Microsoft Copilot Pro Subscription too because it lives right in Word and tempted her way too much to just let it write the whole essay instead of her actually thinking. If you want him to actually learn how to structure things, here is what I found after my own trial and error:
- Perplexity AI Pro Monthly Subscription is decent because it focuses on citations. It makes them look at sources, which helps with the "doing it for him" problem.
- Keep a close eye on the activity logs... even the expensive ones can be tricky if they dont have a specific student mode toggled. Its just tough finding something that isnt basically a cheating machine tbh.
