I am freaking out a little bit because my company just announced a major restructuring and my boss basically told me that if I want to keep my project lead spot I need to show some actual AI competency by the end of the month. I have exactly three weeks to get my head around LLMs, prompt engineering, and the basics of machine learning. The problem is I have zero free time at home with the kids, so my only window to learn is my 90-minute train commute into the city every morning. I tried bringing my laptop once but the train is so packed I can barely move my elbows, so I am 100% stuck using my phone for this.

I have been looking at a few different apps but I am totally torn on which one is actually worth the money for a quick turnaround. I am looking at Coursera because they have the big names like DeepLearning.AI but I am worried the mobile app is just gonna be me watching videos without actually doing anything. Is the mobile interface actually good for the labs? Then there is Brilliant which seems more interactive and bite-sized for a train ride, but I dont know if it is serious enough for a resume or if it just feels like a game. I also saw DataCamp has a mobile app that does coding exercises.

  • Coursera (the classic choice but maybe too heavy for mobile?)
  • Brilliant (looks fun but is it too simple?)
  • DataCamp (coding focused, wondering if the mobile app is actually functional)

My budget is around 40 or 50 bucks for the month which is fine, but I cant waste time on a platform that has a buggy app or doesnt let me download stuff for when the train hits a dead zone. I need something that actually sinks in while I am standing on a shaky train with people bumping into me. Should I go with the name recognition of Coursera even if it is clunky on a small screen, or is something like Brilliant or DataCamp better for someone who literally only has an iPhone to work with? Which one of these mobile apps is going to give me the best AI foundation in 21 days?

Honestly, Coursera is gonna let you down. I tried using it for a machine learning cert on my commute and the mobile labs were basically unusable. You spend more time zooming in and out than actually learning. Unfortunately, the app is really just a video player with a messy interface for anything technical. If you're on a 21-day deadline, you need something that actually works on a small screen.

  • DataCamp Premium Monthly Subscription
  • Brilliant Premium Annual Learning Plan I had issues with DataCamp's offline mode in the past, it's not as good as expected and can be buggy when you hit those dead zones. But compared to the others, their bite-sized coding exercises are the only thing that'll fit on a phone screen without making you go crazy. Brilliant is okay for theory but it's not serious enough to impress a boss looking for AI competency. Stick with DataCamp but keep your expectations low for the offline stuff. Its basically the only way you'll get anything done while standing on a train.

Just catching up on this thread. I went through a similar crunch last year when my firm shifted to automated pipelines and I had to learn the logic behind transformer models on my phone. It was stressful. If you're looking for something that actually works on a shaky train, the DataCamp Premium Monthly Subscription is probably your most logical bet. Tbh, their mobile interface is built specifically for low-friction input. Instead of a full keyboard, they give you blocks of code to tap. It sounds simple, but it actually forces you to recognize syntax patterns without the frustration of typing on a tiny screen. It works well. Here are some technical specifics based on my experience:

  • Offline functionality is robust. I used to download 5-6 lessons at a time for when the signal dropped in tunnels.
  • The AI Fundamentals track covers LLMs and prompt engineering specifically for those in lead roles.
  • Budget-wise, look for flash sales. They frequently drop the price to around 50 percent off if you sign up via the web browser first rather than through the Apple App Store. Another decent alternative is the Sololearn Pro Monthly Plan. It is way cheaper than Coursera or DataCamp, usually under 20 dollars. It doesn't have the same industry prestige, but the bite-sized lessons are effective for a 90-minute commute. I found that their generative AI intro was surprisingly technical for the price point. Don't bother with the Brilliant.org Monthly Subscription if you need to prove competency to a boss. It's great for logic, but it lacks the applied technical depth you'll need for a project lead spot. Stick to the platforms that actually show you the code architecture.
