So my 8 year old daughter came home today all excited because her teacher said they can use some AI stuff for their big science project on butterflies that starts this coming Monday and honestly Im totally panicking right now. I keep hearing all these scary things on the news about AI and privacy and how it might show kids stuff they arent supposed to see so I really dont want to just let her loose on the regular ChatGPT or whatever people are using these days. I barely even know how to use my own smart phone sometimes so this whole thing feels way over my head and I feel kinda stupid asking but I really need to find something that is 100% safe for a third grader.

I dont even really know what a prompt is or how you even talk to these things properly and I am so worried she is gonna see something inappropriate or that her private info will get sold to some company. I was looking online and got so overwhelmed with all the different names and prices because we really cant afford some big monthly subscription right now since things are tight here in Columbus lately with my husband being between jobs. I just want something simple where she can maybe ask questions about what butterflies eat or how they fly without me having to hover over her shoulder every single second making sure she doesnt click something bad or end up on a weird website.

Is there like a kid version of this stuff that has filters or something built in? I tried looking at one site but it asked for a credit card just to start a trial and that made me really nervous. I need to find something by Sunday night so she can start her research for school. Sorry if this is a dumb question but I am just so out of the loop with technology these days and I want to make sure I am being a good parent and keeping her safe online while still letting her do her homework. What are the actual safest AI tools out there for elementary kids that wont break the bank or leak her private info?...

Omg you are totally fine! Most parents are scrambling to keep up with this stuff lol. I’ve tried a few of these with my nephews and there are actually some amazing tools made just for schools so you dont have to worry about her seeing anything she shouldn't. Seriously, stay away from the regular chat tools for now, they aren't meant for 8 year olds!

  • SchoolAI Student Spaces COPPA Compliant Platform is basically the gold standard for me. It’s totally private and she can just chat about her butterflies without any ads or weird links popping up. Pro: super safe and easy. Con: sometimes kids find it a bit school-ish but it gets the job done for science projects.
  • Khan Academy Khanmigo for Students AI Learning Assistant is also fantastic!! It's like a little tutor that asks them questions back to help them learn. Pro: amazing for actual science research. Con: it might have a small monthly fee if your school doesn't provide it, but its super high quality. Its way better than the adult versions, trust me! You’re doing a great job being careful and she is gonna love her butterfly project!!

Late to the party but I have been testing these for a bit and honestly have no complaints. It is way better than just letting them loose on the open web.

  • Mizou AI Student Chatbots is my favorite. It is a safe bubble where you can set a specific topic like monarch butterflies and it wont wander off. No weird ads or data selling either.
  • MagicSchool AI Student Tools works really well for third graders. It has strict filters and the free version is plenty for school research.
  • Canva for Education Magic Media is also awesome for the visual side of her project posters. A prompt is just the question she types into the box, like how do butterflies fly? It is super satisfying seeing them learn without the constant anxiety of what they might click on... you will be totally set for Monday.

> I was looking online and got so overwhelmed with all the different names and prices I've tried many of these over the years and honestly, just skip the paid school platforms. Microsoft has solid free safety filters, so just stick with their basic tools.
