Ive messed with SQL and Python for a bit but my new Chicago commute is a nightmare. My laptop is way too clunky for the train.

Need a solid mobile app to learn AI foundations and ML from scratch while Im commuting. What actually works and isnt just dumb flashcards?

Ive been in the tech game for over a decade and honestly, Ive tried basically every learn to code app that popped up since 2012. Most are garbage, just glorified trivia. When I was stuck on the L during my own Chicago commute years ago, I found that hands-on logic is way better than watching videos. In my experience, the only one that actually sticks for foundations is Brilliant.org Premium Annual Subscription. It doesnt just feed you syntax like some robot.

  • It uses interactive visuals for neural networks which makes way more sense than staring at a tiny screen of code.
  • You actually build the math logic in your head through visual puzzles.
  • The ML foundations track starts with basic probability and builds up to complex models. I tried DataCamp Mobile App Subscription too, which is solid for Python syntax, but for the actual why behind AI, Brilliant is king. It really saved my sanity when I was learning on the go.

Late to the party but I spent months trying to find a solid mobile workflow and honestly, it was mostly a letdown. I had issues with almost every free app being way too shallow... they just dont teach the actual architecture behind ML. Most of what you find is just fill in the blank stuff which wont help you build anything real. If you want something that actually sticks, DataCamp Learn Data Science App for iOS and Android is probably the only one I didnt hate. It has a legit mobile compiler for Python tasks which is super rare. You might also check out Brilliant.org Interactive Learning App Premium Subscription for the math foundations. Its visual and works well for loud train rides where you cant focus on complex syntax. Just watch out for the price tags tho, definitely wait for a sale because the full monthly rate is kinda brutal.

To add to the point above: honestly, Im a bit more skeptical about jumping into mobile apps for something as heavy as AI. Over the years, Ive seen too many people focus on quick wins and skip the actual math. It feels good to click buttons on a train, but youve gotta be careful about apps that prioritize engagement over real technical depth. I have a couple clarifying questions to see what might actually fit:

  • Are you looking for the heavy math side like linear algebra, or just trying to learn how to call libraries?
  • Does the app need to work completely offline for those dead zones in the tunnel? In my experience, if a platform doesnt force you to think through the architecture, its not really teaching you. I can suggest a more reliable route once I know your focus.
