Which free hosting service works best for OpenClaw multiplayer?

So me and my cousin have been trying to get a multiplayer game of OpenClaw going for like a week now but we keep hitting walls with the connection stuff. We grew up playing the original Captain Claw on his dads old Windows 98 machine and finding out there is a modern engine for it was like a total nostalgia trip. We really want to do some of the custom levels together but since neither of us can port forward because of our crappy apartment routers we need some kind of free hosting or virtual lan thing.

I am basically torn between using Radmin VPN or ZeroTier at this point. My logic was that Radmin is usually the go-to for these old school games because it is super simple to set up and you just join a room but I have heard some people say it can be a bit bloated or have weird lag spikes. Then there is ZeroTier which everyone says is more professional and stable but I looked at the setup and it seems a bit more involved for my cousin who isnt exactly a tech wizard. He barely figured out how to install the game lol.

I also saw someone mention using a tiny Fly.io instance or something similar to host a lobby but that might be overkill for just two guys trying to jump on platforms and shoot cats. We have zero budget for this so it has to stay free and I am hoping to get it working by Friday night so we can have a proper marathon session. I am leaning toward Radmin just for the ease of use but I am worried about the ping since he is over in Pittsburgh and I am in Philly. Does OpenClaw handle the packet loss differently on these services? Or is there a third option I am missing that works better for these specific fan-made engines?

I just want the smoothest experience without having to spend three hours debugging network protocols instead of actually playing the game...

To add to the point above: I had a similar headache trying to get a session of Captain Claw 1.3 DVD Edition running with my brother last year! We tried everything, but what finally saved our weekend was Playit.gg Global Tunneling Service. It is seriously like magic for those of us stuck behind strict NATs in apartment buildings. What I love about it is you dont even have to install a whole virtual network adapter or make your cousin join a private room. You just run a tiny executable on your pc, and it gives you a public address he can just paste in. My brother didnt have to configure a single thing on his end! We were jumping through La Roca in like five minutes flat.

  • No weird lag spikes like I saw with Radmin.
  • Setup is basically one-click once you verify the account.
  • Totally free for a single tunnel.
  • Works fantastic with these modern fan-made engines. Seriously, give it a shot. It is way less bloaty than the old school VPN apps and the ping is amazing!

Honestly, I have been using a specific setup for years and I am extremely satisfied with how it handles these old fan engines. Since you are in Philly and he is just across the state in Pittsburgh, your ping should be fantastic if you use the right tool. Radmin is okay for a quick fix, but it feels a bit bloated these days and I have had some nasty lag spikes during boss fights which is a total mood killer. I highly recommend going with Tailscale Personal Plan Free Virtual LAN for your marathon session. It is way simpler than ZeroTier for someone who isnt tech-savvy, and it works perfectly for OpenClaw. Here is why it works so well:

  • It uses the WireGuard protocol which is basically the gold standard for speed and security right now.
  • You dont have to mess with any firewall settings or port forwarding at all because it handles NAT traversal automatically.
  • It creates a direct encrypted tunnel between your PCs so the latency is basically non-existent compared to old school relay servers. I have been using it for a long time and have no complaints about stability. Your cousin just needs to install the app, sign in with his email, and he will see your machine on his list. Just copy the virtual IP address it gives you into the OpenClaw join menu and you are good to go. It is much more stable than Radmin and way less fiddly than ZeroTier. You guys are gonna have a blast with those custom levels, some of them are way harder than the original game tho... have fun shooting those cats!
