i really have no idea where to start and honestly it all looks so scary lol. i was thinking about trying to learn on my train ride to work in chicago since i got 30 mins each way. my budget is basically zero though. is there an app that explains this stuff like im five?
Just saw this thread and wanted to jump in. I have spent a lot of time digging through various mobile platforms over the years to find what actually sticks when you are starting from zero. In my experience, if you want something that really breaks it down like you are five without costing a dime, you should definitely check out the Enki Mobile App Data Science and AI Track. Its basically designed for exactly what you are doing—short bursts of learning during a commute. I started using it back when I was totally lost about how neural networks functioned, and the way they structure their daily workouts makes the whole thing feel way less intimidating. They use a methodical approach to explain things like machine learning and big data in plain English. The free tier is actually usable and deep, which is honestly rare these days. Another one I have tried many times is the Mimo App Learn to Code and AI Basics. Its super organized and lets you jump into the AI foundations track without needing a laptop or a technical background. It feels professional but stays accessible for a total beginner. The lessons are bite-sized, so even if you only have twenty minutes before your stop in Chicago, you can actually finish a module and feel like you learned something real. If budget is your main concern, these two are the most practical ways to build a foundation. Just stay consistent and dont let the jargon scare you... it gets much easier once you see the patterns.
I've tested several platforms during my commute and these two are the most solid for learning basics.
> Coursera Mobile App for Android and iOS lets you audit courses To add to the point above, you definitely gotta try Sololearn! It is fantastic for beginners because it feels like a game. I spent my commute on Sololearn AI for Everyone Course and it really simplifies things. Also, University of Helsinki Elements of AI Part 1 is legendary. Its 100% free and perfect if you want that ELI5 vibe without any scary math! Love it!
Re: "Just saw this thread and wanted to jump..."
Pros: Completely free. The interface is clean and they excel at breaking down complex topics for absolute beginners without using scary jargon. Works great on a phone.
Cons: Focuses heavily on AI literacy and ethics rather than showing you how to build things.
Pros: Highly reputable source. You get a digital badge for your profile once you finish the intro modules which is nice for the resume.
Cons: Some of the later videos require a bit more focus, so it might be tough if your train is particularly loud or distracting. Both of these are mobile-ready and fit that 30-minute window well. Sticking to these bigger platforms usually ensures the information is technically accurate and up to date.
